Product Overview

Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S is a telephoto zoom lens for Nikon Z-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Nikon in 2020, it has 21 elements in 18 groups.
Photographers will be pleased by the fact that the lens is internally-zooming, meaning that the barrel does not extend when the focal length is changed. This helps balance and weather sealing; it is also great for long-term durability, as there is less chance for moisture and dirt to get in. For incremental weathers, Nikon is kind enough to include weather sealing.
As a telephoto zoom lens with a bright maximum aperture, the Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S is well suited for sports and portrait photography. Built-in image stabilization makes the lens easier to use handheld, and can be quite valuable for landscape works. Owners will also like the available tripod collar.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 92% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
At 200mm focal length the lens focuses in around 0.5 sec from infinity to 2m (1:10 magnification), which is a little faster than the AF-S 70-200mm f2.8E VR. The zoom ring is located at the front of the lens and turns through 80 degrees the way Nikon users are used to. The lens control ring is only 8mm wide and is located close to the camera.
Pros
  • Excellent optical and sensor stabilization
  • Sharpness at 200mm and 1/3 sec
Cons
  • No focus breathing
  • Not parfocal

pcmag[2]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Nikon has put its vibration reduction (VR) tech into this lens. It works in conjunction with the in-camera IBIS on Z cameras for better compensation than either system would net on its own. Autofocus is speedy, with elements moving from the closest focusing distance to infinity in about a second.
Pros
  • Sturdy, all-weather construction
  • Fantastic autofocus
  • Solid build quality
Cons
  • Bulky and heavy
