Product Overview

LG SM99 is a high-end 8K IPS TV in LG's 2019 NanoCell lineup. It is powered by a 10-bit IPS panel and available in 75" size classes.
Some highlights of the LG SM99 include a high screen-to-body ratio up to 94.56% and high brightness. Additionally, it supports full-array LED local-dimming. With mini-LEDs, full-array LED dimming helps the panel achieve higher contrast and dynamic range. It supports HDR formats including Cinema HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR 10 Pro, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), Advanced HDR by Technicolor, and HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping. It performs well in terms of contrast.

    External Reviews

    pcmag[1]

Reviewer score 86% (normalized by Neofiliac)
    Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The LG 75SM9970 is an impressive LCD TV and one of the first 8K models you can buy. It has very strong contrast performance for an LCD, wide colors, and a strong upconversion system. It doesn't have the panache of the LG Signature Series OLED88Z9, which boasts some of the most impressive color range and accuracy.
    Pros
    • Excellent contrast performance for an LCD
    • Excellent upconversion for an 8K TV
    Cons
    • No native 8K content
    • No HDR10 support

    Reviewers from rtings have found:
The LG 75SM9970PUA is a good TV for most uses. Its large size and decent viewing angles are great for medium-sized rooms. It has low input lag for those who want to game on a giant screen, but there are some uniformity issues that can be distracting. It delivers a good picture quality, even for lower resolution content.
    Pros
    • Large size and decent viewing angles
    • Outstanding motion handling
    • Decent peak brightness
    • Great color gamut
    Cons
    • Mediocre black uniformity
    • Low contrast ratio
    • No variable refresh rate

    techradar[3]

Reviewer score 57% (normalized by Neofiliac)
    Reviewers from techradar have found:
Nano Cell is just the re-branded name for LG's Super UHD TV series. Its 75-inch screen looks much more ‘straightforward’ than that of the stunningly slim OLED model. It also boasts HDMI 2.1 input support so that it can handle 8K signals up to 60Hz.
    Pros
    • Impressive 8K picture quality
    • Nano Crystal technology
    Cons
    • No localised backlighting
    • No HDR10 support
