Product Overview

Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S is a telephoto zoom lens that covers a common yet nonetheless exciting focal range. Like similar offerings from competitors, however, it is an external zoom lens, though Nikon has designed it like an internal-zoom one.
This choice means that, while the NIKKOR lens is not particularly heavy for what it is, it is a notably longer lens. The tradeoff here is that Nikon is able to make the lens more robust. Combined with built-in image stabilization, this makes the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm lens a good option for outdoor sports and wildlife photography.

Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
Nikon’s new Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR S is a worthy successor to the venerable AF-S 80-400.6G ED VR which the new lens surpasses in almost every aspect. The lens focuses in around 0.5 sec from infinity at 200mm focal length to 2.11m (1:10 magnification), which is fast. The zoom ring has a pretty short throw of 80 degrees and a 45mm wide rubber surface with a good grip.
Pros
  • Excellent optical and sensor-based image stabilization
  • Sharpness at 100mm focal length
  • Very good hand-holding
Cons
  • No zoom creep
  • No fluorine coating
