Product Overview

Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is the 2nd generation fast professional telephoto zoom lens for the E-mount mirrorless system. Priced at the same level as the 1st-gen lens, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is a significant upgrade with a number of improvements and new features.
The SEL70200GM2, being part of the G-Master lineup, has all that one could expect from a professional zoom: It is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters and offers constant maximum aperture across its zoom range. It uses Sony's Nano AR Coating II to prevent flare and has an optical design that improves both sharpness and rendering.
Perhaps most importantly, the Mark II lens is 29% lighter than its predecessor and the lightest in the industry today. It is indeed almost as light as the F4 G lens from Sony. As many photographers have lamented that the weight of the f/2.8 telephoto zoom is what has been stopping them from using it more often, this significant weight reduction almost fully resolve the issue.
As usual, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II has industry-leading autofocus performance. It is able to shoot at the limit of Sony's Alpha 1, at 30 fps, with full autofocus tracking. This is thanks to four linear motors, double that found in what the competitors are offering.
Last but not least, the new lens has even more physical controls, including an ON/OFF switch for the aperture ring, a feature that videographers will appreciate.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 94% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The FE 70-200mm 2.8 G Master II improves on its five year old predecessor to become not just the best quality telephoto zoom for the Sony mirrorless system, but arguably the best overall on the market. It’s now pin sharp across the frame throughout its focal range even at f2.8, one that essentially eliminates breathing over typical focus pulls, and also manages to lose almost one third of the weight of the Mark I.
Pros
  • Pin sharp across the frame even at f2.8
  • Excellent image quality
  • Excellent focus breathing
Cons
  • Not as sharp as the Mark I

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The Sony lens features a front-positioned focus ring. Positioning the zoom ring toward the back of the lens provides a better balance for handheld zooming. At review time, the Sony lens costs $1.00 less than the Canon lens. At f/4, the f/2.8 lens is the sharper option.
Pros
  • Sharp f/2.8 lens
  • Excellent image quality
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • Small weight difference compared to Canon lens
