Product Overview

Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 is a high-end 15.6-inch mobile workstation powered by 11th-gen Intel Xeon / Core Tiger Lake processors and ISV-certified NVIDIA graphics up to RTX A5000 with 16GB of graphics memory. Apart from the display, it shares most of its features with its 17-inch sister model.
While the P17 Gen 2 got a slight size reduction, the P15 Gen 2 has gone the other way: now measuring the same thickness as the 17-inch model. Its four IPS and OLED display options are direct carry-overs from the 2020 model. The entire suite of I/O options of the P15 Gen 2 is also inherited from 2020, though the Thunderbolt ports are upgraded to Thunderbolt 4.
Other notable features include up to 128GB of DDR4 memory that now clock at 3200MHz. ECC is available with Xeon processors. There is also one extra M.2 SSD slots, and the SSDs are now upgraded to PCIe 4.
Alongside the P15 Gen 2, Lenovo also refreshed other ThinkPad mobile workstations, including the P17 Gen 2 and P1 Gen 4. They are joining the P14s Gen 2 and P15s Gen 2 unveiled earlier in 2021.

digitaltrends[1]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
The ThinkPad P15 has 94 watt-hours of battery packed away inside the huge chassis. Windows 10 Hello support is provided by both a fingerprint reader and infrared camera with facial recognition. It's isn't so much faster than the fastest thin-and-light laptops that either its price or its girth is justified.
Pros
  • Extremely thin and light
  • Excellent battery life
  • Built-in webcam
Cons
  • No expandability
  • No Thunderbolt 3 support

laptopmag[2]

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from laptopmag have found:
The Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 hits 98.8 frames per second on Sid Meier's Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. The 720p webcam delivers the same kind of slightly grainy results as most laptop webcams. The battery life is stellar for a workstation, delivering 10 hours and 40 minutes.
Pros
  • Excellent performance for a workstation
  • Comfortable keyboard and touchpad
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • Heavy and bulky
  • No Thunderbolt 3

notebookcheck[3]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
Gaming performance is very good, and even modern games run at the native 1080p resolution using the highest settings. The two fans in the P15 Gen 2 are often completely turned off when doing less demanding activities, and you won't be bothered by electronic noises or coil whine. However, as soon as you put the device under more load, the fans quickly kick in and also reach levels of over 45 dB(A) Despite the high noise levels, the ThinkPad Gen 2 struggles with very high case temperatures.
Pros
  • Bright 500 cd/m² display
  • Good battery life
  • Good maintenance options
Cons
  • High temperatures under load
  • No Thunderbolt 3

pcmag[4]

Reviewer score 91% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 ably fills its predecessor's role as the heavyweight champ of the company's mobile workstation lineup. With the Core i9 and RTX A5000, it's powerful enough to race through jobs that would make most laptops whimper and cringe. All the screens delivered fine color fidelity, though the Dell's OLED panel outdid the others.
Pros
  • Powerful Intel Core i9 CPU and RTX A5000 GPU
  • Excellent keyboard and touchpad
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 3 port
