Product Overview

Lenovo ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 is a flagship 17-inch mobile workstation powered by 11th-gen Intel Xeon / Core Tiger Lake processors and ISV-certified NVIDIA graphics up to RTX A5000 with 16GB of graphics memory.
While the P17 Gen 2 retains the design of the P17 from 2020, the Gen 2 model is slightly smaller. Still, portability is clearly not the priority here. It can be configured with either a FHD or a 4K UHD IPS display that are carried over from last year. Indeed, the entire suite of I/O options is also inherited from 2020, though the Thunderbolt ports are upgraded to Thunderbolt 4.
Other notable features include up to 128GB of DDR4 memory that now clock at 3200MHz. ECC is available with Xeon processors. There is also one extra M.2 SSD slots, and the SSDs are now upgraded to PCIe 4.
Alongside the P17 Gen 2, Lenovo also refreshed other ThinkPad mobile workstations, including the P15 Gen 2 and P1 Gen 4. They are joining the P14s Gen 2 and P15s Gen 2 unveiled earlier in 2021.

notebookcheck[1]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
The Lenovo ThinkPad P17 G2 is the only 17-inch workstation in our comparison that is equipped with one of the latest Tiger Lake CPUs. It is not meant for general use, but rather for engineers who design buildings or products with the help of CAD applications. The outdated design is an obvious drawback: 16:9 displays with wide bezels are no longer contemporary, particularly when it comes to high-end devices. The display does not reach the advertised 100% sRGB coverage and the Full HD resolution feels too low for a 17- inch screen.
Pros
  • Decent input devices
  • Compact chassis
  • High-quality workstations
Cons
  • High power consumption under load
  • Dim display
  • DPC latencies
