Product Overview

Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD is a full-frame telephoto zoom lens with constant f/2.8 aperture for Sony's E-mount mirrorless system. It completes Tamron's "holy trinity" set of f/2.8 professional zooms with the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III and the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III.
True to Tamron's commitment to usability, this 70-180mm F/2.8 lens uses the same 67mm filter thread found on other Tamron lenses for the E-mount. Being an external zoom, unlike other f/2.8 telephoto lenses for the E-mount, the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III offers more flexibility, too.
This lens features Tamron's new VXD linear motors that deliver high autofocus performance and precision. Among the 19 optical elements inside, there are six XLD and LD elements and three GM and hybrid aspherical elements: with Tamron's BBAR-G2 coating, it delivers good aberration-suppression, flare-resistance, and distortion correction.

The Tamron 70-180 is much superior to the Sony FE 4.5-5.6/100-400 GM OSS. As of November 2020 this Sony lens and the Tamron are priced pretty much the same. If you are mainly shooting sports and you need the most reliable tracking on you Sony A9II this may still be the lens for you – due to lack of better alternatives directly from Sony.

Reviewers from cameralabs have found the following***:
At 180mm focal length the lens focuses in around 0.8 sec from infinity to 1.88m (1:10 magnification), which is not very fast and a bit slower than the Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS at 0.7 sec. The zoom ring turns through 65 degrees the way Sony users are used to and has a 49mm wide rubber surface with a good grip. It turns with medium resistance and can hardly be operated with one finger.

Reviewers from pcmag have found the following***:
The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is another quality lens for the Sony system. Like its wider siblings, the 17-28mm and 28-75mm, engineers have managed to deliver a lot of optical quality. Images look great, even on a demanding, high-resolution camera body. The big compromise is optical stabilization, an omission mitigated by camera-based IBIS systems.

Pros
  • Excellent results at f/2.8 aperture and telephoto focal range
  • Excellent build quality
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • No optical stabilization
  • Omits fluorine coating
