External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Canon RF 85mm f2 is a fairly affordable short telephoto lens for the EOS R mirrorless system that performs double-duty for portraits and close-ups. The f2 focal ratio may not deliver as much background blur as faster models, but there’s still plenty of potential for shallow depth-of-field effects. The lens hood is not included and the macro capabilities may be limited to 1:2 magnification - or half actual size.
Pros
  • Wide-open and wide-open
  • Excellent autofocus
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • No weather sealing
  • No built-in optical stabilisation

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
Canon RF 85mm F1.2 L USM Lens is in a different class. Professional-grade build quality and a vastly wider aperture are two significant differences. L lens has significantly less spherical/axial aberrations, with bokeh retaining better color. There is a size and weight price to be paid for the ultra-wide aperture.
Pros
  • Sharpness at f/2
  • 5-stop hybrid image stabilization
  • 1-stop aperture
Cons
  • L-series lens lacks a hood and an inexpensive pouch

techradar[3]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The RF 85mm f/2 Macro is a compact lens that weighs just 500g. The lens' nine diaphragm blades render very pleasing blurry backgrounds, bokehs and shallow depth-of-field effects. For a lens that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, the images it produces are top notch.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Excellent sharpness
  • Sturdy build
Cons
  • Slow autofocus
  • No hood
  • No weather sealing
