Product Overview

BMW 1 Series F40 is a compact hatchback in production from 2019. It is available with a range of inline-3 and inline-4 engines that displaced 1.5 to 2.0 liters.
Compared to the F20 1 Series, the F40 has drastically smaller engines. Even the "M135i" uses only a 2-liter I4. Further, the car became FWD-based, with lots of AWD forced upon the driver.
Overall, it is a giant disappointment.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The complete B-Series conversion, as it’s known, consists chiefly of Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers. Each benefits from Birds-spec tuning bespoke to both the M140i itself and, crucially, to one another. Lateral grip levels aren’t massive – they’re still comfortably inferior to those of an M2 Competition – but the way the rear axle behaves is so neat and predictable.

Pros
  • Taut and controlled low-speed ride
  • Fantastic build quality
Cons
  • Lateral grip levels aren’t as good as M2 Competition

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The 118d is a better car than the model it replaces, delivering greater practicality, comfort, refinement and technology. The front end responds instantly to the quick and accurate steering, the nose diving toward the apex with laser-guided precision. Even when pushing hard, grip is tenacious and understeer virtually non-existent. The 148bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel is a decent performer.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of rear-wheel drive

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The car’s aura of expensive material solidity isn’t quite as convincing as it might be. Out on the road, even in M Sport trim, on optional 19in wheels and with BMW M Sport Plus package equipped, the 1-Series behaves in a more refined and well-rounded way. You get an 8.8in touchscreen infotainment system as standard even on entry-level cars, along with a partly digital instrument setup – and can upgrade to a bigger central display for a not-unreasonable £1500.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • No Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity
  • Lacklustre infotainment

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
BMW has been brave with this car, nailing its colours to the mast in the form of the passive dampers. Once you’ve got some speed up and begun to work the dampers, the 128ti flows with what could be called ‘forgiving poise’ The B48 2.0-litre is now well known, its undersquare design packing a uniformly powerful, if slightly laggy, punch that does plenty to push you forward from 2000rpm upwards.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Impressive handling
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • A little underwhelming on back roads
  • Lack of grip

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Despite sharing the same footprint as its predecessor it’s a roomier machine, with more head and leg room (up by 33mm) in the back and a bigger and class-competitive 380-litre boot. The interior looks and feels more upmarket, too, the sweeping dashboard design, knurled metal-effect ventilation controls and wall-to-wall soft-touch plastics helping make it more than a match for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Refinement has been vastly improved, with less wind and engine noise in the cabin.

Pros
  • Well-packaged, roomy interior
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Not as agile as its predecessor

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The 128ti is not pretending to be any kind of M car, because it really isn’t, at least not in that rather brutal way most M cars have become these days. Despite appearances, it’s actually quite subtle under the skin. Early indications are that, despite the 128ti looking like another me-too hot hatch, its real character is far more nuanced than its appearance suggests.

Pros
  • M135i engine tuning
  • Tii badging
Cons
  • No four-wheel drive
  • No automatic gearbox

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The 1 Series was the follow-up to the BMW Compact that first established BMW as a player in a segment where it competes with higher-spec versions of hatchback stalwarts like the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Mazda 3. There are just three trim levels in the 1 Series range at present, which includes the entry-level SE, Sport and the racy M Sport versions. Even the lowliest diesel manages 0-62mph in just over 10 seconds, while the go-faster M135i still returns up to 38.7mpg on average.

Pros
  • Fastest petrol engine on the market
  • Decent rear-wheel-drive performance
Cons
  • Lack of interior space

autoexpress[8]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The 1 Series turns in keenly, grips strongly and resists body roll admirably. While the dashboard doesn't quite look as glitzy as an A-Class, build quality is flawless. As ever, BMW's infotainment set-up is intuitive to use and quick to load. A head-up display is offered in a 1 Series for the first time.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Comfortable to drive

Cons
  • Lack of Android Auto
