Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
Sony’s been careful to match the controls with the earlier FE 400mm f2.8 for a seamless experience switching between them. This includes the same diameter manual focusing ring as well as the twistable function ring alongside it which can be programmed to return to a preset focusing distance. Like most super-telephoto lenses, there's no filter thread at the front, so instead filters are accommodated internally near the mount, using a slot system. Underneath the lens is a permanently mounted tripod foot with the choice of two thread sizes.
Pros
  • Full power of the Alpha body’s autofocusing systems
  • Very long focal length
  • Very quick focusing
Cons
  • No filter thread at the front

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 OSS G Master optic is a large optic that will only make its way to photographers who absolutely need it. The lens ships with a humungous carbon fiber lens hood to keep out stray light, and the supplied hard case has dedicated space for filters and teleconverters. Autofocus accuracy and speed is critical on a lens like this, so it's great to find that the camera's tracking system to stay with it as it moves around the scene.
Pros
  • Excellent autofocus performance
  • Impressive focus tracking
  • Compact and lightweight
Cons
  • Limited focus range
  • No teleconverters
