Product Overview

Mazda MX-5 Mk4 (chassis code ND) is a subcompact convertible sports car in production from 2015. It is available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.5 to 2.0 liters.
Compared to its predecessor, the ND MX-5 is even lighter and has a more rigid chassis. This combo ensures that the car has superior handling, while the new engines are slightly more powerful and efficient.
Utility-minded owners will likely need to keep an alternative for hauling things around, as the tiny cargo space is almost surely insufficient.
Another plus is the small 9.4m (30.8ft) turning circle.

BBR’s original intention was to develop a naturally aspirated kit for the zingy SkyActiv 1.5. But it found Mazda had developed this powertrain to such a high degree that even substantial modifications made few gains. Remapping the ECU for more power is, of course, largely fruitless unless forced induction is involved and so turbocharging it was. Peak power even arrives at the same 7000rpm as in the standard car.

Pros

The 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G already excels, but the additional polish of the Super 220’s delivery means nobody is ever going to regret paying for this upgrade. You'll still want those suspension tweaks, which allow the chassis to match the powertrain; at the very least you should shell out for the anti-roll bars. The comprehensive setup on this car is very nicely conceived indeed, and while it compromises the car's comfort in town, it's already hitting its stride.

Mazda’s iconic two-seater has received so many over the years that we’ve lost count. The R-Sport is available exclusively with the entry-level 1.5-litre engine. The four-cylinder motor sends 130bhp exclusively to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

Mazda MX-5 Sport Venture is a limited-run version of last year's R-Sport. Only available with the entry-level 1.5-litre engine. Priced at nearly £3000 more than the more powerful 2.0- litre Sport. Comes with stop-start functionality and Mazda's KERS system.

Mazda’s i-Eloop KERS technology and stop-start functionality feature for the first time across the MX-5 line-up. In second-from-top Sport Tech trim, it has a comprehensive kit package that belies its relatively low £28,395 list price. Dynamic response is on a par with much more costly alternatives, and you can pretty much take it to the limit wherever you fancy without falling foul of the law.

Mazda now offers dealer-fit upgrades to the MX-5 that really do make a telling difference to the way it handles and performs. There’s a lightweight BBS 17in alloy wheel; an Eibach suspension lowering kit that drops the chassis 25mm lower to the ground; and a sports exhaust. You could have the lot on a Sport Nav car, with an otherwise matching spec to the 30th Anniversary edition save for the front brakes, for the same price.

Mazda has finally relented and given us telescopic reach for the steering column. The engine also now has reach enough for second gear to be snagged for corners taken at speeds closer to the national speed limit. For the money, no other powertrain is this evocative (a GT86 doesn’t even come close) and Mazda gets all the other basics right.

From 1 September, the MX-5 will come with a telescopic steering column offering 30mm of welcome reach adjustment. The entry 1.5 model will also get a few small mechanical improvements to offer 1bhp more, at 130bhp — although that’s not exactly something to shout about. The 2.0, on the other hand, grabs headlines with a longer list of upgrades to offer a much more substantial 23bhp, with peak output now a rather healthy 181bhp.

The Z-Sport version of the MX-5 is no different from the standard Sport Nav model. No changes have been made to the 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol power plant. It still develops the same 158bhp at 6000rpm, while all of its 148lb ft of torque is available at a heady 4600rpm.

The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 fits the classic roadster template. Power comes from 1.5 and 2.0-litre petrol engines. Four trim levels are available: SE-L, Sport, Sport Tech and GT Sport Tech. There are two body styles available: a convertible with a fabric roof and the folding targa hardtop of the RF.

A totally new engine has replaced the outgoing MX-5's 158bhp 2.0-litre and it now packs 181bhp, an extra 5Nm of torque and a rev range expanded to 7,500rpm – up from 6,800rpm in the old car. Mazda claims a 0.8-second improvement to the 0-62mph sprint time (now a pretty impressive 6.5 seconds) in the Convertible and 0.6 seconds in the RF.

The Mazda MX-5 RF is treated to the same updates as the convertible. The most welcome of which is the introduction of a more powerful engine. The RF is the slightly more refined option, but loses just a tiny bit of the soft-top's sense of occasion while costing more, too.

The 2.0-litre MX-5 now has the grunt we've longed for and is probably still our pick. The entry-level 1.5- litre car still soldiers on, and gets its very own set of revisions for 2019. Revised Mazda MX-5 sports car joins our fleet – just in time for summer. The car is every bit as good now as it was 30 years ago. The technology in the current car is starting to feel a little long in the tooth. The sat-nav is particularly fiddly to use and the graphics are looking decidedly dated. Perhaps it's time to fork out £110 for the optional Apple CarPlay upgrade.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Fiddly sat-nav
  • Lack of safety kit

The 30th Anniversary celebrates the MX-5's 30th birthday. Just 550 are earmarked for the UK – 370 Convertibles and 180 RF models. All 3,000 cars come in Racing Orange (presumably referencing the 1991 Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B) It's powered by the same 181bhp 2.0-litre engine.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Impressive handling
  • Lots of extra equipment
Cons
  • Slightly stiffer than a Sport Nav+

Mazda MX-5 is only available in two trim levels - SE and Sport. Faster 2.0-litre cars, like the one driven here, are offered exclusively in more lavish Sport Tech and GT Sport Tech trims. The latter adds some exclusive burgundy Nappa leather seats and stainless steel scuff plates, and 17-inch, black, multi-spoke BBS wheels. From Sport trim upwards all MX- 5s are now fitted with low speed automatic emergency braking that works up to 18mph travelling forward, 5mph in reverse.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent gearshift
Cons
  • Lack of standard equipment
  • Not the most fun to drive

Priced from £27,700, it's limited to just 150 examples and features Polymetal Grey metallic paint, some smart 16-inch Rays alloy wheels finished in gloss black and a special silver-grey colour for the fabric convertible roof. R-Sport spec also adds burgundy Nappa leather trim inside, which really sets the cabin off. It looks great and gives a premium feel; given that this fourth-generation ‘ND' MX-5 has been on sale for five years now.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Comfortable ride
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Lack of rear-drive tech

The new MX-5 Sport Venture is only available with the entry-level 130bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. It comes painted in a new Deep Crystal Mica Blue shade and with a grey fabric hood. Stone-coloured Nappa leather upholstery gives it a premium edge over the Sport trim-level car it's based on. As in the Sport model, buyers also get a Bose audio system, which will please audiophiles and tech geeks alike.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Pricey for what it is
  • Limited to 130bhp

The MX-5 has outlasted rivals such as the earlier MG-F and later Honda S2000. The current-generation is available with a choice of 1.5- and 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol fours, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The cabin is cramped for tall or wide drivers, the boot is small and the manually operated fabric roof is effective.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Decent on-road performance
  • Good infotainment
Cons
  • Not as practical as MX-5

The MX-5 Miata comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker stereo and HD radio. Optional tech features include embedded navigation, a Bose premium audio system and satellite radio. When equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission, the Miata is estimated to get 26 miles per gallon in the city.

Pros
  • Sleek styling
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable interior
Cons
  • Limited-slip differential
  • No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay
  • No smartphone mirroring

Internal modifications to the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine help it breathe better and rev higher. All new 2019 MX-5 models will feature the more robust and reliable gearbox internals. The extra power and revs are nice, but excellent handling is still the Miata's strongest quality.

Pros
  • More fun to drive than last year's MX-5
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Improved fuel economy
Cons
  • More expensive than previous models

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
Mazda Connect isn't the most robust infotainment system, housed on a 7-inch screen. Embedded navigation is only standard on the top two trims. There's no glovebox in the MX-5, just a small, lockable compartment between the seat backs. The Miata's closest competitors are the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 twins.

Pros
  • Fantastic infotainment tech
  • Comfortable, supportive Recaro seats
  • Easy to drive
Cons
  • Lack of driver-assistance tech
  • No adjustable driving modes

The beauty of driving an MX-5 has always been its low-speed thrills. New for 2019 is the GT-S package, which upgrades Grand Touring models with the same performance hardware as Club trim cars. Despite an output disadvantage to the Toyota 86 (205 hp) and Golf GTI (220 hp), the MX- 5 soft-top out-hustles both sports cars to 60 mph.

Pros
  • Fantastic fuel economy
  • Sleek interior
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • No automatic gearbox
