Product Overview

Fiat 124 Spider (Type 348) is a subcompact convertible sports car in production from 2016 to 2019. It was available with a turbocharged inline-4 engine that displaced 1.4 liters.
Essentially a Fiat variant of the Mazda MX-5, the 124 Spider differs mainly in the engine (turbocharged but smaller). It was assembled alongside the MX-5 at Mazda's plant in Japan.
Utility-minded owners will likely need to keep an alternative for hauling things around, as the tiny cargo space is almost surely insufficient.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Fiat 124 Spider comes with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear. Combined with RWD, this setup provides one of the best handling characteristics and tuning capabilities. Another plus is the small 9.4m (30.8ft) turning circle.

External Reviews

autoexpress[1]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
The Fiat 124 Spider is built alongside the Mazda MX-5 at the Japanese brand's Hiroshima plant. Unlike many Fiat models, the 124 Spider feels very solidly screwed together, with tight shut lines for the all the panels and a glossy paint finish. The interior also feels extremely well-built, plus the materials have top quality look and feel. The Fiat gets a decent haul of safety kit, including four airbags, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring and hill hold assist.
Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • No DAB radio
  • No automatic emergency braking

carmagazine[2]

Reviewer score 72% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The Fiat 124 uses unique spring, damper, roll bar, steering and stability control settings. While the Abarth version features a Sport button the 124 does not, though you can deactivate the stability control. On the road the Fiat feels similar to the standard MX-5 chassis tune. The ride is good, dealing admirably with some pretty distressed Italian roads.
Pros
  • Punchy, fun to drive
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Only one engine option
  • No limited-slip differential

carwow[3]

Reviewer score 67% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from carwow have found:
The Fiat 124 Spider is basically a Mazda MX-5 in a sharp Italian suit. The two cars were developed alongside each other and are effectively your only options if you want an affordable two-seat sports car. While the 124's engine gives it a laid back character, it's hard to argue with a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds.
Pros
  • Stylish looks
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Engine struggles at lower speeds
  • Not as fun to drive as Mazda MX-5
