Product Overview

BMW M2 F87 is the high-performance variant of the F22 BMW 2 Series subcompact coupe in production from 2015 to 2021. It was available with a range of inline-6 engines that displaced 3.0 liters.
Interestingly, the F87 M2 debuted with an N55B30 engine rather than the S55 found in larger M cars. Fortunately, BMW corrected this with the introduction of the Competition and CS models in 2018.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The M2 Competition has more keenness, incisiveness and engagement all the time. It's great on the road but more so once you ask more of it. The dual-clutch transmission is good, but I’d spec the manual gearbox every time. You can lean on it with confidence and adjust the line easily.

Pros
  • Fantastic agility
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • No manual gearbox
  • Not the most fun to drive

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The BMW M2 Competition is a huge step on from the M2. The M Division has fitted a front strut brace, retuned the steering map and dropped a handful of rose joints into the rear suspension. The spring rates and damper settings (now passive only) have been adjusted too. Up front, meanwhile, the twin-turbocharged straight six replaces the old single-Turbo unit, although it has been detuned to 404bhp and 405lb ft.

Pros
  • Sleek and refined cabin
  • Excellent standard equipment
Cons
  • Not as fun to drive as the M3 and M4

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The M2 CS is everything we expected – and more. It's a noticeably keener, more incisive and ultimately more entertaining car to drive than the M2 Competition on the track. The key to its attraction lies with its reworked chassis, which, with the adoption of adaptive damping, is really quite exceptional. We're already counting the days until we get to drive it on the road.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive handling
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • More expensive than the M2 Competition

autocar[4]

Reviewer score 80%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
For the CS there's only 40bhp more power and almost no improvement in torque. The slightly firmer ride, slightly louder cabin and the meatier steering feel combine to dial up the intensity of the driving experience. The car will slide predictably, endlessly, enjoyably and just plain beautifully, but only if you want it to.

Pros
  • Brilliant engine
  • Impressive agility
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive on the road
  • Pricier than competition

autoexpress[5]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
BMW M2 Competition is a fast and fun driver-focused coupe. Biggest change is under the bonnet, where the M2's old turbocharged straight-six has been replaced by the full-fat, BMW Motorsport developed engine from the M4. The standard M2 bodyshell has been stiffened with a carbon fibre strut and aluminium bulkhead braces.

Pros
  • Powerful turbocharged straight-six
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • Nothing in particular

autoexpress[6]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The M2 Competition is arguably the best car on sale today. The rear-wheel-drive chassis is great fun to exploit. There's lots of grip but bags of balance, which means you can feel confident pushing hard into turns. It's firmer than the RS 3 due to its more focused set-up, but the harder you drive, the more rewarding the car becomes.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Superb all-weather capability
Cons
  • Lacklustre handling
  • Taut steering

autoexpress[7]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The BMW M2 went on sale in April 2016, priced from £44,070. It had a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine delivering 365bhp. As standard there was a six-speed manual gearbox, but a seven-speed dual-clutch auto was available at extra cost. In mid-May 2018 the M2 Competition replaced the regular M2. It featured a heavily revised engine that was now rated at 405bhp and, if the optional M Driver's Package was specified, the top speed rose to 170mph.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system

  • Lack of standard equipment

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The new BMW M2 CS is the angriest 2 Series since the introduction of the brand's compact coupe back in 2014. With 444bhp under the bonnet – an increase of 40bhp over the M2 Competition – the small coupe matches the full-fat M4 for pure potency. It'll chalk up 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • No rear-wheel drive option

autoexpress[9]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The M2 has some carbon-look trim, leather sport seats and grey dials. The driver's seat has plenty of adjustment meaning it's simple to get a great driving position. Up front there is plenty of room with good visibility out over the bonnet and to the sides. The boot is large, making the M2 a practical family car should it need to be.

Pros
  • Fastest petrol engine on the market
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Expensive compared to rivals
  • Interior is a letdown

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The M2 CS gets a whole bunch of carbon fiber bits, all of which help reduce weight. Carbon ceramic brakes are available, which provide longer-lasting stopping power without fade. The CS is 55 pounds lighter than an equivalent M2 Competition, which is a fair amount of heft-removal.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine
  • Premium materials
Cons
  • No Android Auto
  • Lackluster driver-assistance features

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The M2 Competition's fixed suspension strikes a great balance. The S55 engine is also quite thirsty, with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of just 18 miles per gallon city and 24 mpg highway. While there's plenty of space for those seated up front, the M2's tiny rear seats don't have the room for adults.

Pros
  • Powerful S55 engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of in-car tech
  • No Android Auto

digitaltrends[12]

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The M2 Competition is frighteningly quick in a straight line, but it's the curvy roads and tight tracks where this coupe comes alive. Stringing the straight-six out to its 7,500 rpm redline conjures a pleasant rasp from the exhaust. The stiff suspension that I'd loved on the road course is rather firm around town.
