The S-Max produces 187bhp and 148lb ft from the combined Atkinson-cycle petrol and AC synchronous electric motor. Ford has carefully rerouted the exhaust around the hybrid’s additional battery pack, so the boot space is the same as in the diesel. The ride quality is the stand-out, with the sort of controlled damping that beautifully rounds off bumps’ edges. We sadly lost Richard Parry-Jones recently, but his spirit lives on here.

Ford pioneered the fun-to-drive MPV with the first S-MAX. The latest model is an even more rounded product. It drives like a plush family saloon, yet offers seven-seat practicality. It's more comfortable than the previous model and packed with enough technology to shame even some luxury saloons.

The S-MAX Mk2 has been recalled five times so far, with the first campaign launched in June 2016. This was because the headlights could switch themselves off on some cars that were built up to February 2016. Overheating diesel engines leading to the sump cracking were the reason for the second recall, which was launched in March 2018. Four months later, faulty clutches led to the third recall being issued.
