Product Overview

Ford Mustang Mk6 facelift is a liftback coupe pony car in production from 2017. It is available with a range of inline-4 and V8 engines that displaced 2.3 to 5.2 liters.
Interestingly, the NA V6 has disappeared from the lineup. In its stead, one can choose either a more economical I4 or the an American V8. There is little doubt that the reasonable choice is the V8, preferably in supercharged guise.
Drivers who appreciate handling should keep in mind that the Ford Mustang 6 uses MacPherson front suspension, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.

Ford has worked to enhance the old-school feeling of a V8. It coughs into life with an almighty roar and settles to an animated, burbling idle. The beauty of this car is that it doesn’t need to be driven in anger to feel special. Despite the substantial mass it has to fight, the Mustang is surprisingly composed in the bends.

Pros

Cons
  • Expensive for what’s on offer

The 2.3-litre four-pot doesn’t sound so ordinary under the bonnet. It has an offbeat thrum that often makes it, at times, more redolent of a five-cylinder motor than an inline four. It’s responsive, and pulls hard enough through the middle of the rev range to make fairly light work of the kerb weight. It feels balanced, lively and engaging, as you’d hope any rear-driven coupé would.

The Ford Mustang GT 5.0 Ecoboost makes 286bhp at 5400rpm. torque has been increased to 325lb ft from 3000rpm. When paired with the new 10-speed auto ‘box, this results in a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds. Prices start at £37,595 as opposed to £43,095 for the comparable V8.

With the 10-speed ’box, the Mustang's 0-62mph time drops to 4.3sec. Upshifts don’t exactly match those of a Porsche PDK unit for precision, but neither are they required to in a Mustang. The active exhaust in particular now gives the car a blaring, saw-toothed aural signature to match the muscle of the engine.

There’s 286bhp and 325lb ft on tap, which allows for a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds. Thanks to its twin-scroll turbocharger, that torque is available from 3000rpm. Handling-wise, the Mustang has suitably heavy steering, which weights up depending on the drive mode you’re in. The MagneRide dampers contain the Mustang's portly body well through bends, without being so firm as to compromise its ride.

Ford’s new gearbox and engine tweak has made a clear improvement to the car's peak acceleration. In ‘drag strip’ and ‘track’ modes the automatic version of the car becomes the perfect counterpoint to the physical, analogue challenge of launching the manual version off the line. With the auto, you simply mash the accelerator and watch as that ten-speed gearbox rifles through the ratios.

Mach 1 is the most track-friendly slice of American muscle Ford has ever officially sold on this side of the Atlantic. A bespoke front splitter, underfloor chassis tray and rear diffuser deliver a combined 22% of extra downforce over the regular Mustang GT. The front and rear subframes have been uprated, and the MagneRide adaptive suspension has been given a unique Mach 1 calibration. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a Shelby-sourced six-speed manual transmission.

At 4.8 metres long, the Mustang is nearly the same length as the five-door Ford Mondeo. Up front, access is easy thanks to the wide opening doors. The Ford Mustang Bullitt is a proper, if slightly old-school V8 sports car. Its engine breathes more freely and therefore sounds better than ever. It looks brilliant, and is even pretty good to drive – in a traditional, chest thumping kind of way. The £5,000 premium quite a bit to ask, however.

The GT500 rides on adaptive dampers and sends its power through a standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. There's no manual gearbox on offer; for that, you'll have to look to the lighter, but pointier, 519bhp Shelby GT350. The GT500 will do 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds and carry right on through to 180mph, courtesy of the rampant, raucous, ricocheting insanity that is its 5.2-litre supercharged V8.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • No manual gearbox
  • Limited UK availability

Firmer front springs, uprated anti-roll bars and stiffer subframe bushes. Electric power steering system recalibrated, and these changes are noticeable. Mach 1 feels better tied down than a standard V8 Mustang, more direct and more willing to be hustled. It's not mind-bendingly fast, but put it to work and the Mach 1 thunders along at quite a lick.

Pros
  • Punchy V8 engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Price hike over standard model

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
Ford's done far more to the Mustang than the styling suggests, but it's still a leftfield choice. The back seats are cramped, the interior plastics are sub-European and the V8's average of 23mpg is as retro as the styling. But it's genuinely fun to drive, whether the road's straight or twisty. And while it looks strong at £43k, remembering that when the Mustang first arrived here it cost almost £10k less.

Pros
  • Fantastic looks
  • Great performance
  • New 10-speed auto transmission
Cons
  • Slightly cramped back seats
  • Lack of infotainment tech

Ford's blue-collar hero is back, and for the first time in the UK, it's touched down in Bullitt form, too. This particular Mustang cashes in on the now famous Bullitt film – named after the movie's protagonist Lt. Frank Bullitt. In Ford-speak, Bullitt means Fastback-only body, DIY six-speed box with cue-ball selector, and a slick Highland Green or grey paint job. The first batch of 350 UK-bound cars has already been sold, so you fancy one to pay a premium on the £47,545 asking price.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Clunky transmission
  • A little tedious in traffic

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The Mach 1 has wider wheels and tyres front and rear along with retuned steering and new suspension componentry. This includes a revised subframe with stiffer bushes while the steering software has been recalibrated. All this is garnished with a new front grille, a small lip spoiler on the boot and a rear diffuser nicked from the US market GT500. Combined the aero mods bring a 22% increase in downforce, adding to the range of subtle updates.

Pros
  • Bigger and more agile than the standard Mustang
  • Lots of upgrades
Cons
  • Lack of side support
  • Not the most fun to drive

The 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is on sale now with a base price of $59,000. The flat-plane V8 is a thirsty, 526-horsepower devil. Supportive and comfy Recaro race seats come standard in the GT350. The Shelby is just fine for daily-driving duties, its Normal drive mode offering reasonable give.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Fantastic performance
  • Fun to drive
Cons
  • Middling fuel economy
  • Big, aggressive tires

A few different drive modes really let you dial in the ride. It's not a tech-rich sports car, with only blind-spot monitoring and regular cruise control. While the Sync 3 system is very user-friendly, the screen is sometimes laggy. The Bullitt is an $8,000 upcharge over a Mustang GT Premium.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • No driver-assistance features
  • Laggy infotainment

The HPP Mustang pushes out peak torque between 2,500 and 5,300 rpm. The engine can produce 90% of its horsepower at a sustained 6,500-rpm redline. At 3,758 pounds, the Mustang Convertible is still a heavy car, but it corners with outstanding poise.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Impressive handling
  • Excellent infotainment tech
Cons
  • Lacks MagneRide dampers
  • Pricier than base Mustang

Ford's 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 is a real sweetheart. The only drivetrain element I'd change is installing a shifter with slightly shorter throws. The interior is standard Mustang stuff, with Ford's Sync 3 infotainment tech onboard. The biggest strike against this Shelby is its less-than-stellar fuel economy.

Pros
  • Sleek, sporty styling
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Fantastic performance
Cons
  • Not the best fuel economy
  • Not the most fun to drive

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R has a 5.2-liter, naturally aspirated, flat-plane-crank V8. The engine is unchanged from the GT350, which is fine, because it's wonderful. The R is more eager to turn in and has a touch more grip through corners.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • No automatic rev-matching
  • Poor fuel economy

As hardcore as this Shelby looks and performs on a track, it has a softer side suited for regular street driving. The drivetrain returns an EPA-estimated 12 miles per gallon in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. Infotainment tech falls to Ford's familiar Sync 3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Powerful turbocharged engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Cheap gas guzzler tax

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
Ford touts the updated Shelby GT350 as a machine that's rewarding for track veterans but approachable for novices. While the new GT350 is rewarding on a road course, there was some concern that the more aggressive chassis tuning might translate to an abusive ride on public streets. While Chevrolet doesn't offer a direct competitor to the GT350, the 455 horsepower Camaro SS 1LE and 650 hp supercharged Camaro ZL1 are both models with similar intentions.

Pros
  • More fun to drive than ever before
  • Rugged, sporty interior
  • New rear spoiler
Cons
  • More expensive than rivals
  • More aggressive chassis tuning

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The precise steering and excellent body control makes the GT500 feel like a much smaller car. The brakes erase speed so efficiently that it feels like driving into a tractor beam. Ford offers a three-year, 36,000-mile, bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive handling
  • Powerful MagneRide suspension
Cons
  • Lack of driver aids
  • No adaptive cruise control
