Product Overview

BMW Z4 E85 is a subcompact convertible sports car in production from 2002 to 2006, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-6 engines that displaced 2.2 to 3.0 liters.
Compared to the Z3 that preceded it, the E85 Z4 has a longer hood and thereby one of the most iconic designs for cars of its class in modern times. The exaggerated hood gives the car a very well balanced weight distribution. The M54 engine is also rather reliable.
The ZF 5HP automatic transmission is horrifying in terms of reliability, though the Z4 is usually purchased with manual transmission.
Two issues with the Z4 in pre-LCI guise include the top motor, which can be damaged by water, and the electric power steering mechanism, which has a nylon gear that swells overtime and seizes the steering column on its own.
