Product Overview

Toyota 86 (chassis code ZN6) is a compact sports car in production from 2012 to 2021. It was available with a single flat-4 petrol engine that displaced 2.0 liters. It was built alongside the Subaru BRZ as a collaboration between the two companies.
One of the best lightweight, affordable sports cars, the Toyota 86 has a well-balanced weight distribution and low center of gravity, thanks to the compact H4 engine. It has a gorgeous exterior styling, too, which hints at the car's good handling dynamics.
Toyota has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.28 coefficient of drag to show for it. Utility-minded owners will have to keep in mind that the 243L (9cu-ft) cargo space may not be sufficient.

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
wheel-drive handling, and characterful Boxer engine. Inside, buyers get more leather and Alcantara trim, as well as handy audio controls on the steering wheel. There's a new 4.2-inch screen embedded in the dials, adding trip functionality and a digital fuel guage. While the GT86 isn't the most powerful car on sale, the engine begs to be revved and offers plenty of performance for keen drivers.

Pros
  • Best-in-class handling
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Pricier than rivals
  • Not as fast as rivals

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The standard car came with dual-zone climate control, sports seats, bi-xenon headlights, powered folding door mirrors with electric adjustment, and 17-inch alloys. Sat-nav was an option, along with leather and Alcantara-trimmed heated front seats, although some special editions got these as standard. Another option worth seeking out is the nine-speaker JBL sound system. All GT86s have to be serviced every 12 months or 10,000 miles, priced at £250 and £395 respectively.

Pros
  • Stylish looks
  • Good standard equipment
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • No cambelt to replace
  • Squeaky seat bolsters

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The GT86 is a joint project between Subaru and Toyota. Its engine bay plays host to the former's legendary 2.0-litre boxer engine. It produces 197bhp and 151lb ft of torque without recourse to super- or turbocharging. The upshot is a 0-62mph dash despatched in a fairly modest 7.7 seconds.

Pros
  • Gorgeous styling
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Not that quick
  • Not that fun to drive

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The Toyota GT86 Aero tops the recently rejigged UK range. Under the (actually slightly ill-fitting) skirts there are no mechanical differences from a regular GT86. Powertrain, suspension, brakes – it's all standard stuff. The tyres have changed, though. Arguably the best-looking bit on the Aero is a set of dark grey 18-inch OZ alloys.

Pros
  • Fantastic looks
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • Bodykit is a bit too harsh
  • Not the most practical

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
There's fantastic throttle response, quick, well weighted steering and a nice firm brake pedal. Add little inputs to the steering when you're driving in a straight line at speed and the front end darts immediately. Toyota's ‘keyless go’ is standard, but we couldn't see the zip-up dashboard cover like on the concept car, forum watchers take note!

Pros
  • Great fun to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
  • Fantastic rear-wheel drive
Cons
  • Lack of power at higher speeds
  • Torsen diff could be more precise

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
Only 86 Giallo Editions are being made available for the UK, each painted in the same lively shade of metallic yellow. With double black stripes along the sills, the colour scheme's vaguely reminiscent of the Bruce Lee-tribute tracksuit Uma Thurman dons in Kill Bill. It's just so lively; turn-in is eager, to say the least, and at all speeds the car feels up on its toes and ready to play.

Pros
  • Punchy, lively engine
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Lack of low-down torque
  • A bit tacky interior
