Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class X253 is a compact crossover in production from 2015 to 2020, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4, V6, and V8 engines that displaced 2.0 to 4.0 liters.
Compared to the lethargic GLK that preceded it, the X253 GLC added the latest 63AMG and 63AMG S variants that offer tremendous amount of power for a relatively small vehicle.
The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy for the hybrid vehicle, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Interestingly, Mercedes also introduced a hydrogen fuel cell model called F-CELL, though it is not widely available.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
As refined a ride as we’ve come to expect from the GLC, with the four-pot diesel able to deliver confident, if moderate progress. Even in entry-level Sport trim, there’s a largely premium feel to the cabin, which competes with the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 for visual appeal. Those in search of a comfortable, well-appointed SUV would do well to put one near the top of their list.

Pros
  • Comfortable ride
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of dynamic handling
  • No digital instrument cluster

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The GLC adopts a new range of petrol and diesel engines, as well as two new plug-in hybrid drivetrains. The old seven-speed torque converter automatic gearbox makes way for a more contemporary nine-speed unit. Other stylistic changes include a chrome package, which was previously offered as an option. The GLC drives like it always has, which is to say comfortably, quietly and reassuringly.

Pros
  • Better-than-average fuel economy
  • New infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of aural character

Mercedes GLC 250 petrol is aimed squarely at buyers nervy of diesel's demise. Using Mercedes' latest 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Official fuel economy of 37.2mpg puts it near enough 10mpg shy of the entry-level 220 d.

Pros
  • High-quality interior
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment system
  • Poor fuel economy

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The GLC now adopts Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system. A new widescreen 10-inch display sits – still rather incongruously – on top of the dash. It can still be operated using the laptop-style touch pad on the centre console or, for the first time in a GLC, via touchscreen. All but the basic Sport trim (only available in the UK on the cheapest diesel model) now have digital dials.

Pros
  • More fun to drive
  • Improved infotainment tech
Cons
  • Not quite as spacious as the Q5
  • No petrol option

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and 63 S (standard SUV and Coupé) arrived in April 2017 with 470bhp and 503bhp. The next year, a GLC 250 petrol joined the range. All diesel-engined models are capable of pulling loads weighing anywhere up to 2,500kg. All GLCs are well equipped, with the SE featuring 17-inch alloys, a powered tailgate and DAB radio.

Pros
  • Excellent build quality
  • Good fuel economy

Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment system
  • Cheap to run

elifted model to keep it fresh against competition from the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. All cars get a fresh LED lighting signature, and bumpers are subtly reprofiled based on trim level. Entry-level models don't even get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; it's disappointing to see software that's often fitted to basic superminis doesn't come as standard in a near-£40,000 SUV.

Mercedes now has so many plug-in hybrid models that it has created a dedicated EQ Power sub-brand. The GLC uses a familiar four-cylinder petrol engine teamed with an electric motor for a combined 316bhp. It can propel this two-tonne SUV from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, despite CO2 emissions of only 62g/km.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Powerful turbocharged petrol engine
Cons
  • Not as agile as an X3

The new GLA is dripping with high-tech features, possibly too many for the average Joe. While it's a little shorter, this new crossover is 104mm taller and the wheelbase has extended, growing rear space in particular by 116mm. The rear seats can recline and slide fore or aft up to 140mm and, if you slide them as far back as possible, it's at the expense of the 435 litres of boot space in the regular combustion engine variants.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • No manual transmission
  • Lacklustre gearbox tuning

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The GLC is now four-cylinder only unless you opt for one of the V8 AMG models – which we'll cover separately. The new diesel's likely to make up the bulk of the sales in the UK - the 300 d we drove produces 242bhp and 369lb ft. It's paired to the same automatic gearbox and 4Matic four-wheel drive as the rest of the range. Headline figures are a decent 39.2mpg and 157g/km.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent off-road performance
Cons
  • Lack of practicality
  • No S-Class

All GLC63s are all-wheel drive, with the rears permanently engaged. There's a limited-slip differential lock for good control during fast cornering. Suspension is independent at the front and multilink rear, with three-chamber air springing and adaptive adjustable damping; straight from the E63 4Matic+. The ESP stability control is three-way adjustable. The last letter in GLC means you'll find the Mercedes' interior much like that of the C-class' – and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • No infotainment

Benz has continued to update COMAND with new features, but the result is an interface that feels patched together. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration are also available, though they are an additional $350 upgrade. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC350e 4Matic EQ Power starts at $51,645, including a $995 destination charge.

Pros
  • Elegant styling
  • Comfortable ride
  • Good fuel economy
Cons
  • Lane-keeping assist can feel jerky and jarring
  • Poor driver's-aid tech

The GLC300 starts at $43,495 (including destination) for rear-wheel drive. The Mercedes-AMG GLC63 is much dearer at $74,745 for the SUV and $77,495 for the Coupe. The 2020 GLC starts out relatively affordable, but as always, things can get out of control in a hurry.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of rearward visibility

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The most affordable of the GLCs is the basic SUV, which rides very well over any kind of road. If you want something more nimble, go get an SLC roadster. The GLC really gets interesting when you come to the AMG models. The base GLC 300 SUV offers you up to 56.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacks AWD
