Product Overview

Volkswagen Arteon (typ 3H) is a compact executive sedan in production from 2017 to 2020, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.5 to 2.0 liters.
The successor to the VW CC, the Arteon offers rather spacious interior combined with a decent exterior design. Curiously, both 7-speed DCT and 8-speed automatic transmissions are used alongside the 6-speed manual. Even though the engines are small, some are rather potent.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Volkswagen Arteon is limited by MacPherson strut front suspensions.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 57% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
The 1.5-litre TSI, borrowed from the latest Golf, brings the list price (and benefit-in-kind tax) down to a more fleet-friendly level. It produces a Golf-matching 147bhp and 184lb ft of torque, yet still manages to propel the considerably heavier Arteon from 0-62mph in 8.3sec. As well as losing out on performance to its range mates, it sends drive to the front wheels only instead of all four, and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.
Pros
  • Cheap to run
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent fuel economy
Cons
  • Not as refined as rivals
  • Not as practical as rivals

autoexpress[2]

Reviewer score 64% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
The Arteon is the latest in a line of large executive models built by the German firm. It follows on from the CC and Phaeton as a luxury car for the masses. There are just two trim levels - Elegance and R-Line - and you won't find S, SE or SEL models making up the numbers.
Pros
  • Cheap to run
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of headroom in the back
  • No automatic gearbox

cnet[3]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cnet have found:
Even on its smallest 18-inch wheels, the Arteon has an excellent stance on the road. The steering is relatively light but quick and responsive, and the ride quality is superb. Volkswagen's XDS cross-differential system is standard on all Arteons. The car is best viewed as an alternative to things like the A5 and A7.
Pros
  • Class-leading ride quality
  • Excellent infotainment tech
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of standard tech
  • No 4Motion all-wheel drive

digitaltrends[4]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
Volkswagen's MQB platform continues to impress us with its refinement and solidity. Ride quality is excellent as long as the car is set in comfort or normal modes. With its excellent road manners and generous cargo space, the Arteon would be a great road trip car. While styling is subjective, we also feel the VW is better looking than the Nissan.
Pros
  • Impressive refinement and practicality
  • Excellent ride quality
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of infotainment tech
  • Uncomfortable rear-wheel drive layout
