Product Overview

Subaru Forester 5 (chassis code SK) is a compact / mid-size crossover in production from 2018. It is available with a range of flat-4 engines that displaced 1.8 to 2.5 liters.
Unsurprisingly, while Subaru redesigned the vehicle, it looks just like its predecessor any hundreds of other crossovers on the road today. The generic, bland design is what attracts many.
Unlike many manufacturers who downsized like crazy, Subaru still used decent-sized engines, usually without turbo, though a hybrid drivetrain was introduced. To save fuel, only CVT is offered.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 48% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
The fifth-generation Forester is a slightly longer, wider car than the outgoing one, and feels more spacious inside in most respects. The cabin makes a classier first impression than last Forester managed, too, with more enveloping, appealing-looking primary fittings and a few richer material touches. It’s a shame Subaru doesn’t make it easier to keep the Forester running under electric power at low speeds; that's possible but you really do have to be delicate with the accelerator to manage it.
Pros
  • Decent fuel economy
  • Decent on-road performance
Cons
  • Alternatives are more practical
  • No automatic gearbox

autoexpress[2]

Reviewer score 60% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
The Subaru Forester has been a mainstay of the Subaru lineup for over two decades. It began life as something of a toughened-up four-wheel-drive estate before evolving along with customer tastes into a more traditional family SUV. It's not as good to drive as some cheaper, more road-focused SUVs, but there's not much else that can offer such a breadth of ability and level of standard equipment at this price.
Pros
  • Excellent off-road capability
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment
Cons
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Cheap to drive

cnet[3]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cnet have found:
Underneath its new, yet familiar skin, the 2019 Forester is now based on the global Subaru platform that also underpins the Impreza and Crosstrek. The 2.5-liter horizontally opposed (or "boxer") four-cylinder engine makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. The Forester can also haul a bit more, with an increase to 1,500 pounds of towing capability.
Pros
  • Excellent all-wheel-drive performance
  • Excellent standard safety features
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Not as fun to drive as its predecessor
  • Lack of optional safety features

digitaltrends[4]

Reviewer score 59% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
The 2019 Subaru Forester received a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. While it faces stiff competition from the likes of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5, the Forester remains one of the best compact crossovers.
Pros
  • Powerful standard engine
  • Comfortable ride
  • Decent driver-assist tech
Cons
  • Slightly stiff suspension
  • Lackluster infotainment system
