Product Overview

BMW 5 Series Touring E61 is an executive station wagon in production from 2004 to 2007, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4, inline-6, and V8 engines that displaced 2.0 to 4.8 liters.
For the pre-direct injection era, the pre-facelift E61 Touring was one of the last reasonably-reliable BMWs. It was a time when the N52 naturally-aspirated, port-injected I6 was replacing the venerable M54, and the not-too-unreliable N62 V8 was used in the V8 models. The Rather good M57 diesel was also available.
Moreover, compared to the E91 3 Series, the larger size of the E61 made the "Bangled" design somewhat elegant, and many used car buyers regard this generation as a bargain choice. The engines remained easy to DIY.
Unfortunately, BMW still uses MacPherson front suspension on the E61, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.
