Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz CLA X117 Shooting Brake is a compact station wagon in production from 2015 to 2018. It was available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.5 to 2.1 liters.

The X117 CLA Shooting Brake is based on the C117 CLA-Class sedan, which in turn is based on the W176 A-Class hatchback. By stretching the rather good design of the hatchback in multiple directions too many times, however, the X117 CLA Shooting Brake is both over-styled and weak.

In this downsized era, Mercedes hasn't bothered to put more than 4 cylinders to its FWD-based cars. The X117 CLA is no exception. This has resulted in some powertrain reliability issues that are uncharacteristic of Mercedes. In fact, a small Renault diesel was also stuffed in this car.

Mercedes-Benz has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.26 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.

Drivers who appreciate handling should keep in mind that the CLA Shooting Brake uses MacPherson front suspension, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.

Mercedes introduced a minor facelift for the X117 CLA in 2015 for the 2016 model year, though the only changes were in the lights.
