Product Overview

Jaguar S-Type (chassis code X200/202/204/206) is an executive sedan in production from 1998 to 2007. It was available with a range of V6 and V8 engines that displaced 2.5 to 4.2 liters.
Unlike the X-Type of the period, which was a FWD vehicle, the S-type was based on Ford's DEW RWD platform. All models were RWD-only.
The diesel used a 6-speed manual transmission from ZF, while the V6 petrol models used a 5-speed Getrag unit. Manual was not offered for the V8s. All models were available with automatic transmission: At launch, this took the form of Ford's 5R55E 5-speed auto. It was replaced in 2001 (Phase 2) with a ZF 6HP 6-speed unit.
The most interesting engine is arguably the supercharged V8 found in the S-Type R. When it was launched in 2001 for the 2002 model year, the powertrain was comparable to BMW's E39 M5 but weaker than that found in the E55 AMG.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Jaguar S-type comes with double-wishbone suspensions at all four corners. This provides the good cornering performance and durability, though multi-link tends to be more tunable.
