Product Overview

Porsche Panamera Gen2 (chassis code 971) is a full-size luxury sedan in production from 2016 to 2020, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of V6 and V8 engines that displaced 2.9 to 4.0 liters.
Unfortunately, when the second generation Panamera was launched, Porsche abandoned its unique 4.8L V8 engine and went to a fully-turbocharged lineup with engines shared with Audi. Many will lament the loss of naturally-aspirated power and manual transmission, but Porsche is certain that with more power no ill is beyond cure.
While the hybrid and diesel were the heels of the 970 Panamera, they are headlining the Gen2 model: The Panamera 4S Diesel uses the 4.0 TDI engine (later 60 TDI in Audi-speak) with superb torque output and more than enough power (though unfortunately it was discontinued in order not to melt the snowflakes. The top-of-the-line Turbo S model became a hybrid, essentially pairing the V8TT (also found in Audi and Bentley models) with a hybrid setup.
On a slightly positive note, all models used a new 8-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, which is indeed an industry-leading unit.
Porsche has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.28 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Panamera Mark II (971) comes with double-wishbone + multi-link suspension setup. This provides the best cornering performance and tunability, at the expense of cost and a little bit of durability.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
Porsche has tuned the four-wheel drive in the GTS to remain rear-biased even after grip turns to slip. Along with an ESP Sport mode calibrated to intervene a moment later, it really shows, with the chassis adopting just a touch of yaw. At £6707 the brakes are simply unneccesary (how many of these cars ever see a track, you wonder), but the rear-steering and sport chassis are certainly beneficial to both the Panamera's useability and capability.
Pros
  • Fantastic performance
  • Punchy turbocharged engine
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Pricey for what it offers

Reviewers from cnet have found:
The 2019 Porsche Panamera GTS starts at $128,300 if you want the sedan. GTS models get Alcantara fabric on the seats, headliner and steering wheel. You'll have 17.6 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded, which is about the same as a compact crossover.
Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Pricier than other Panamera models
