Product Overview

Subaru Impreza II (code GD series) facelift 2 is an affordable compact sedan in production from 2005 to 2007. It is available with a range of flat-4 engines that displaced 1.5L to 2.5L.
Compared to the 1st facelift, the facelift 2 gave the Gen2 Impreza an even more aggressive front fascia. Engine outputs are also higher, with the WRX STI producing what many naturally V8s from just a decade ago were making.
The same Subaru "formula for success" with flat-4 engine and symmetric AWD remained: On the one hand, this left the vehicle with a lot of weight over the front axle; on the other hand, the lower center of gravity of the engine, combined with the powerful AWD system, allowed the Impreza to handle a lot better than one would expect.
GM also marketed this facelift model of the Impreza II as Saab 9-2X in North American.

There are no turbos, just 104bhp and it takes 13.7sec to get to 62mph. Four-wheel drive naturally, with a lever to switch between high and low ratios. Climate control, a CD player, four electric windows, alloy wheels and a brace of airbags.

Pros
  • Fantastic four-wheel drive
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of grunt
  • Not very fun to drive

1.5 or 2.0 petrol versions of the new Impreza will be on sale in the UK from later this year. A diesel version will follow next year, but for now the 1.5R is the hottest version you'll be able to buy. With 148bhp and 145lb ft of torque fans of hot Imprezas are going to be seriously underwhelmed.

Pros
  • Powerful turbo flat four
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Cheap-feeling switches
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
This one's the RB320, built as a tribute to the late former WRC champ Richard Burns who died in 2005. The body control is simply sensational and this one doesn't seem to suffer as much vertical pogo-ing as our old long-term STi. But it's not just the price that's retro: the cabin feels dated and the boot feels MkII Escort tinny when you shut it.

Pros
  • Fantastic performance
  • Punchy and fun to drive
Cons
  • Interior feels dated
  • The boot feels tinny

New 2.5-litre engine has a twin-scroll turbocharger, a bigger intercooler and variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust sides. Engine also sits 22mm lower for a better centre of gravity. Despite being more refined and having more kit than the old car, the new STi is fractionally lighter than the one it replaces.

Pros
  • Sleek, refined looks
  • Superb handling
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Not as fast as the old STi
  • Lacklustre engine
