External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The A9 is Sony’s first mirrorless full-framer to gain Bluetooth connectivity. It inherits the seamless location-embedding capabilities first-seen on the A6500. You no longer need to sign into PlayMemories and update the remote control app within the camera itself to unlock all of the manual control. Sony has also neatly resolved issues with duplicate or confusing menus.
Pros
  • Excellent battery life
  • Easy to use
  • Bluetooth connectivity
Cons
  • No viewfinder blackout

digitaltrends[2]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
The A9 has a native ISO of 100-51,200 but can be expanded down to 50 and up to 204,800. With a fast card and Sony's XAVC S high-bitrate format, you can record 4K/30p at 100Mbps. 4K video with full pixel readout is possible in both full-frame and Super35 crop modes.
Pros
  • Top-notch image quality
  • Excellent autofocus
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • Menu system is inscrutable
  • No advanced video color profiles

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 93% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sony a9 is a big step forward for mirrorless technology. It betters the fastest, most expensive SLRs in capture rate. It also spreads its autofocus system across almost the entirety of a full-fame image sensor. The camera's ability to nab strong images in low light is further aided by its 5-axis sensor stabilization.
Pros
  • Fantastic autofocus system
  • 4K video
  • 5-axis sensor stabilization
  • Excellent EVF
Cons
  • Lack of third-party lens support
