Product Overview

Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM is a large-aperture normal prime lens for Canon RF-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Canon in 2018, it has 15 elements in 9 groups.
For incremental weathers, Canon is kind enough to include weather sealing.
A normal prime lens, the Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM has the potential to be one of the most used and ultimately versatile option in a photographer's bag. Usually the easiest to design and to QC, it is a great option for landscape and street photography. Its bright maximum aperture also helps night and portrait works. Those who like sunstars (sun bursts) will be pleased by the lens' even-numbered aperture count, though conversely those who find sunstars distracting may have the opposite feeling.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 86% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Canon RF 50mm f1.2L USM is a supremely well-corrected ‘standard’ prime lens for Canon’s EOS R mirrorless system. It delivers the optical goods in every regard with crisp details into the corners, minimal distortion, and very shallow depth-of-field effects with lovely rendering. But be in no doubt, this is an unapologetically large, heavy and expensive lens.
Pros
  • Excellent sharpness across the frame
  • Fantastic bokeh
  • Compact and light
Cons
  • Not as sharp as the earlier EF 50mm f1.2L

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The Canon RF 50mm F1.2 L USM Lens is the most obvious comparable lens. The EF lens has slightly less vignetting and with 8/6 lenses/groups vs. 15/9, it also shows modestly less flare effects. If you are serious about your photography and your budget is adequate, the RF lens is the easy recommendation.
Pros
  • Ultra-wide field of view
  • Excellent image quality
  • Wide aperture
Cons
  • Lacks focus limiter switch

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Canon has a long history when it comes to bright 50mm lenses, and the RF 50mm F1.2 L USM is the best attempt its had to date. It has the crisp look you expect from a modern lens, with the latest anti-reflective and protective coatings, exotic lens elements, and protection from the outdoors. At narrow settings, from f/2.8 through f/8, resolution is outstanding across the frame.
Pros
  • Bright f/1.2 aperture
  • Sharp, sharp field of view
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • Bulky design
  • No optical stabilization
