Product Overview

Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM Macro is a wide-angle macro lens for Canon RF-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Canon in 2018, it has 11 elements in 9 groups.
Unfortunately, Canon has opted to omit weather sealing for this lens, so owners should pay extra attention when shooting in incremental weathers.
The bright maximum aperture for a wide-angle lens is appreciated for night photography, though some may prefer the perspective of an ultra wide-angle lens for this. The built-in image stabilization can be useful for some handheld video work and for low-light stills.

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
As of review time, there are no other RF 35mm f/1.8mm prime lenses. If you want to cover 35mm with a different lens, one of the RF zoom lenses is your option. The RF 28-70 is more of an opposite in many regards. It is big, heavy and very expensive.
Pros
  • Long focal length
  • Wide aperture
  • Good image quality
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • Heavy and heavy
  • Small focus ring

dpreview[2]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The EF 35mm F2 IS USM is Canon's lightest and most compact RF lens so far. The lens has a new formula that sees 11 elements arranged in nine groups. Canon claims that this is one of the key reasons for the high corner-to-corner sharpness, even when the lens is used wide open. A hood isn’t provided with the lens as standard, and that may well be explained by the likelihood of the average user needing or wanting to use it.
Pros
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Control Ring is clickable
  • Very good image stabilization
Cons
  • Control Ring isn’t included
  • Not weather sealed
