Product Overview
Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS is a standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Sony in 2013, it has 9 elements in 8 groups.
Like most zoom lenses, the Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS is externally-zooming.
A standard zoom lens with moderate aperture, the Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS is the original "kit lens" for Sony FE. Still, some photographers may find the results "good enough". The lens is also stabilized, making it even easier to use for videos and stills alike.

Reviewer score 72% (normalized by Neofiliac), a lens starting with the second-lowest price in the FE lineup gives it a significant head start over the competitors. While the image quality delivered by the FE 28-70 is not stellar, it is hard to hard about the value generated by the low price. If looking for a bargain-priced Sony general-purpose lens, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens is definitely worth considering.
Pros
- Sharpness at f/2.8
- Wide max aperture
- Good build quality
Cons
- Lack of flare at narrow apertures

Reviewer score 62% (normalized by Neofiliac)The FE 28-70 Kit lens is surprisingly good for a full frame kit lens. It is cheap, sharpness is quite good to very good at the centre. Corners are average and require the aperture to be closed down up to F8 to get consistent results. The capability to get blurry background are limited due to the aperture of F5.6 at 70mm.
Pros
- Fully made of plastic and is very light
- Sharpness is quite good to very good at the centre
- Dust and moisture resistant
Cons
- Sliding aperture is less recommended than having a F2.8 or F4 constant aperture lens
- Border/corners are average and require the aperture to be closed down up to F8
