Product Overview

Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM is a standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Sony in 2016, it has 18 elements in 13 groups.
The original G Master lens, the SEL2470GM lacks some notable features that Sony has introduced to its more premium lenses after its launch.
Like most zoom lenses, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM is externally-zooming. Fortunately, Sony has provided a zoom lock that at least stops zoom creep. For incremental weathers, Sony is kind enough to include weather sealing.
A standard zoom lens with relatively bright maximum aperture, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM can be a key piece in a photographer's arsenal, though some may prefer prime lenses in this focal range.

Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM captures a visibly wider angle at the short end. Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots. At 70mm focal length the lens focuses in around 0.7 sec from infinity to 0.8m (1:10 magnification), which is as fast as the Tamron and Sigma. The lens shows a little zoom creep but the lock at 24mm can prevent that.

The SEL2470GM does not disappoint. Autofocus is quick, precise and decisive. Especially for portraits, the Eye AF (focus on the dominant eye) works very well. The image center is quite soft at 70mm f/2.8. This clears up nicely by f4 and remains very sharp up to f/11.
