Product Overview

Sony FE 50mm F2.8 Macro is a normal macro lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Sony in 2016, it has 8 elements in 8 groups.
For incremental weathers, Sony is kind enough to include weather sealing.
The 1x magnification opens up a lot of opportunity for macro shots. A normal prime lens, the Sony FE 50mm F2.8 Macro does not boast the brightest apertures, though it still may be worth a try for landscape and street photography.

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The Sony FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens accepts 55mm threaded filters. A lens case is not included in the box, but finding somewhere to stow this lens's small footprint should not be challenging. With just over half as many elements in its design, the 50mm lens shows fewer flare effects in our tests.
Pros
  • Compact design
  • 1.00x magnification
  • 1 1/3 stop max aperture
Cons
  • No lens case included

Reviewer score 52% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
The Sony 50mm F2.8 macro, at 530 euros is well built, its optical performance is very good. The lens offer very good performance in macro, however to reach a magnification of 1.1 you need to be very very close: 16cm. It can also be used for posed portraits and street photography but its AF slowness make that any moving subject will be quite difficult to catch.
Pros
  • Very high sharpness wide open and consistent from center to corners as from F4
  • Very low distorsion no chromatic aberrations
  • Good color rendition and bokeh
Cons
  • Autofocus is slow an noisy
  • No optical stabilisation like on the Sony FE 90 f2.8
