Product Overview

Laowa 25mm F2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro is a manual-focus wide-angle macro lens for Canon EF-mount, Canon RF-mount, Leica L-mount, Nikon F-mount, Nikon Z-mount, Pentax K-mount, and Sony E-mount. It offers one of the highest reproduction ratio for full-frame. Introduced by Laowa in 2018, it has 8 elements in 6 groups.
Unfortunately, Laowa has opted to omit weather sealing for this lens, so owners should pay extra attention when shooting in incremental weathers.
The 5x magnification opens up a lot of opportunity for macro shots. One should note that the lens is not stabilized, does not communicate EXIF information, and is not particularly sharp.

Reviewer score 83% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5-5x Ultra Macro offers the special opportunity to reach 5x magnification at a reasonable price and a robust ( albeit not weather sealed) full metal body. There are few macro lenses that go beyond a maximum magnification of 2x without the use of bellows or extension tubes. The missing autofocus might traditionally not be viewed as a problem in macro photography but with the advent of focus bracketing in modern cameras autofocusing made it back on the wish list for macro lenses.
Pros
  • Can focus to infinity and thus doubles up as a light telephoto lens
  • Full metal body
Cons
  • No filter mount or manual aperture
  • No lens hood
