Product Overview

Nikon Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 S is a wide-angle prime lens for Nikon Z-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Nikon in 2018, it has 11 elements in 9 groups.
For incremental weathers, Nikon is kind enough to include weather sealing.
The bright maximum aperture for a wide-angle lens is appreciated for night photography, though some may prefer the perspective of an ultra wide-angle lens for this. Even though the lens is not stabilized, at this focal range it does not usually matter. In fact, some may be able to get cleaner corners without image stabilization.

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Nikon Z 35mm f1.8S is a good mild wide angle prime for owners of Z-series mirrorless bodies. It delivers very good close-up performance and retains its high contrast exceptionally well even in contra-light situations. The lens focuses in around 0.5 sec from infinity to 0.42m (1:10 magnification), which is pretty fast. It got a Highly Recommended in my Nikon Z 24-70mm f4S review.
Pros
  • Sharpness and contrast
  • Good close-up performance
  • Very good autofocus
Cons
  • Only f4.0 focal ratio

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The Z 35mm F1.8 S is one of a trio of optics unveiled right at the start of the Nikon Z system. It’s neither the smallest lens of its kind nor the cheapest, but being part of a new generation of optics, we should perhaps expect it to deviate a little from what we’re used to. The lens comes with a petal-shaped hood as standard, and a lens wrap is thrown into the box too.
Pros
  • Wide aperture
  • Excellent point reproduction
  • High resolving power
Cons
  • No VR switch or programmable buttons
  • No Vibration Reduction
