Product Overview

Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 CF is a normal prime lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Zeiss in 2018, it has 9 elements in 8 groups.
For incremental weathers, Zeiss is kind enough to include weather sealing.
A normal prime lens, the Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 CF does not boast the brightest apertures, though it still may be worth a try for landscape and street photography.

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
Zeiss Batis 40mm f2.0 CF is a short standard prime lens designed for Sony e-mount mirrorless cameras and corrected for full-frame models. The lens focuses in around 0.35 sec on a Sony A7R II from infinity to 0.52m (1:10 magnification), which is very fast. Repeatability (the accuracy of focus on the same subject after repeated focus-acquisition) of this lens is very good. Like other Batis lenses it also features an OLED display for useful distance and depth-of-field information.
Pros
  • Lightweight and well-sealed
  • Very sharp
  • OLED display for distance and depth-of-field information
Cons
  • Lack of pouch
  • No color aberrations

Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
Thanks to Transcontinenta Zeiss Distributor for the Benelux I could test the new Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 Close Focus. The 40mm is an intermediate focal length between 2 classics the 35mm and the 50mm so well suited for street photography and full or half body portraits. In photo the AF is fast and totally quiet. It is quite reliable for standard subject but it fails regularly when using the Eye AF (tested on A7RIII with AFC)
Pros
  • Excellent sharpness wide open from centre to corner Very good color rendition Soft and very good blurry background Excellent contrast Very good separation sharp area vs blurry background Very good build quality Very low distorsion Low Light fall off Go...
Cons
  • Eye AF issues are still there
