Product Overview

Nikon Z 9 is the flagship mirrorless camera that many have been waiting for from the storied Japanese marque. In a DSLR-like body with built-in vertical grip, the Z 9 has the highest resolution, fastest speed, and strongest AF and low-light performance of any Nikon camera to date.
The Z 9 clearly targets the niche currently occupied by Sony's A1: It has the same resolution of the Z 7II unveiled last year, but the sensor is now stacked in a similar fashion as Sony does to increase its read-out speed dramatically. Nikon boasts blackout-free viewfinder and 20fps burst rate. To process the increase in data rate, the Z 9 uses Nikon's new EXPEED 7 image processor.
With these strong points, the Z 9 also comes with some shortcomings. For example, its EVF is identical to that of the Z 7II, which fall short of Sony's more recent offerings. It is the same unit found in the Sony A7 IV, which is only an entry-level camera.
Alongside the Z 9, Nikon introduced two "S" lenses and announced the development of a third: While it is curious to release this camera after the Olympics, perhaps the Z 9 will be in the hands of some professionals just in time for the Winter Olympics in 2022.

External Reviews

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The Z9 is the first mirrorless ILC to offer 8K/60p video. It may also be the first to offer internal ProRes RAW capture and 8K Raw video. The viewfinder might not have the highest resolution or refresh rate, but it felt very responsive and consistent.
Pros
  • Impressive image quality
  • 4K/30p video
  • Competitively priced
Cons
  • No manual autofocus
  • No 3D AF mode button

techradar[2]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The Nikon Z9 combines the Nikon D6 and Nikon D850 and takes them to a new mirrorless level, creating a super-powered Nikon Z7 II in the process. Some of the Z9's more exotic video modes are only going to be available via a firmware update sometime in 2022. The Z9 also shoots 4K using the full width of its sensor, and includes a 4K/120p mode for slow-mo scenes.
Pros
  • Impressive image quality
  • Firmware update is coming soon
  • 4K/120p video
Cons
  • No autofocus
  • No 8K/60p video modes
  • No wireless charging
