Product Overview

SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is a compact APS-C lens for E-mount and L-mount mirrorless systems. Offering a 27-75mm full-frame equivalent focal range, the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary is one of the few high-grade standard zoom options for APS-C.
While the SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN is available for both E-mount and L-mount, it'll probably find its way on Sony cameras more than anything else. In this particular segment, the only compelling option with f/2.8 maximum aperture is Tamron's 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A. Sony ostensibly expects its APS-C shooters to use full-frame lenses instead.
The SIGMA Contemporary lens, being close to half the weight of the aforementioned Tamron, is a godsend. As usual, SIGMA manufactures its lens in Japan and promises strong build and image qualities.
Additionally, the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN boasts a relatively short minimum focusing distance, particularly at the wide end. This affords the photographer more creative possibilities.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 65% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Sigma 18-50 provides a useful general-purpose range with greater opportunities for blurring than a typical kit zoom. Opened to f2.8 you’ll enjoy some nice blurring and the lens kept me focused easily on the A6400. The only downsides are a lack of optical stabilisation, an omission that will frustrate owners of the many APSC bodies lacking IBIS.
Pros
  • F2.8 aperture
  • Sturdy build quality
  • Great for handheld video
Cons
  • No optical stabilisation
  • No sensor shift IBIS

pcmag[2]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary is an affordable and very capable zoom. It delivers sharp, background-blurring optics and decent macro capabilities. The lack of full weather sealing and a fluorine coating are among its biggest weaknesses. The Editors' Choice-winning Sony E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 remains another excellent option.
Pros
  • 1:2.8 macro reproduction
  • Compact, compact form
  • Optical stabilization
Cons
  • No fluorine coating
  • No full weather sealing
