Viltrox AF 50mm F1.8 FE is an affordable prime lens for the E-mount mirrorless system. It is part of Viltrox's 2021 foray into the autofocus market, which has considerably broader consumer appeal, particularly in the price range that Viltrox targets.
Like the AF 24mm F1.8 and AF 35mm F1.8 in the same series, the AF 50mm F1.8 FE features a physical aperture ring that also has an automatic position, at which point the camera is able to control the aperture directly. Further, this lens features Viltrox's signature USB-C port for easy firmware upgrades.
Traditionally, many Viltrox lenses appear to be copies of Samyang's identical products. The AF 50mm F1.8 FE, however, comes at a focal length-aperture combination that Samyang does not market. We wonder whether this markets a strategic shift to designing and marketing homegrown optics at Viltrox.
