Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm F2
Full-Frame LensProduct Gallery
Product Overview
Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a compact prime lens for full-frame Z-mount mirrorless cameras. It uses a simple optical design with 6 elements in 4 groups and is marketed primarily for its compactness and light-weight nature.
While the optical design of 6 elements in 4 groups, alongside the 40mm focal length, makes one think of the legendary Planar design, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is closer to a Sonnar lens.
Nikon makes the usual promises on image quality, and the lens features weather sealing in its mating surfaces. Thanks to its linear stepping focus motor, the Z 40mm f/2 is a great option for videography as well.

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Nikon Z 40mm f2.0 is by far the smallest, lightest, and cheapest way to put a ‘normal’ full-frame autofocus prime lens on your Nikon Z camera. The lens focuses in around 0.3 sec on a Nikon Z7 from infinity to 0.46m (1:10 magnification), which is very fast. Nikon left out the lens hood and pouch and made the compromise of a cheap plastic lens mount without weather sealing – although the rest of the lens is sealed.
Pros
- Very bright f2.0 focal ratio
- Fast autofocus
Cons
- Focus breathing
- No lens hood or lens hood
