Nikon Z fc APS-C Mirrorless Camera (2021)

MSRP 960 USDNeoscore 52%NEX score 68%

Product Overview

Nikon Z fc is an APS-C mirrorless camera that inherits much of the same features found in the Z 50 and combines them with the design of classic Nikon cameras, notably the F2.
Unlike the Z 50 and other modern Nikon cameras, the Z fc comes with more tactile controls that purists appreciate. At the same time, it features both a flip-out LCD touch screen and an OLED EVF that are the polar opposite of what the original film Nikon SLRs were able to offer. This EVF is upgraded from the Z 50 with higher resolution, too.
Other modern features include Eye-Detection AF as well as WiFi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. The latter allows the photographer to control the Z fc remotely via their smart devices and/or to import images from the camera. Naturally, the Z fc has all the video features found in the Z 50, while its more compact size makes it easier to balance on gimbles.
Last but not least, the Z fc is also available with six premium leather grip colors besides the classic black. These have limited availability.
Alongside the Z fc, Nikon also unveiled a few compact Z-mount lenses that match the Z fc well.

dpreview[1]

Sentiment Score 64%
Reviewers from dpreview have found the following***:
The Nikon Z fc is a capable camera (but not class-leading) for photography and vlogging. It's essentially a Z50 – a camera that earned our silver award – in a different shell. Handling is a mixed bag; the camera is light but feels a bit hollow. If you don't mind losing the dials, the Fujifilm X-T30 is the better choice.

Pros
  • Excellent image quality at both 4K and 1080 resolutions
  • Excellent autofocus
  • Built-in mic
Cons
  • Not class-leading AF
  • Lacks a joystick for moving the focus point

rtings[2]

Sentiment Score 56%
Reviewers from rtings have found the following***:
The Nikon Z fc is decent for travel photography. It's not too heavy and is easy to travel with, though it lacks a handgrip and may not be the most comfortable to use for long periods. It delivers excellent overall image quality and does a great job stabilizing photos when using its kit lens.

Pros
  • Excellent overall image quality
  • Fast continuous shooting speed
  • Wide dynamic range
  • Great autofocus system
  • Incredibly bright screen
  • Superb image stabilization
  • Good internal recording capability
Cons
  • Lacks a handgrip
  • Doesn't do the best job stabilizing camera shake in 4k

t3[3]

Sentiment Score 78%
Reviewers from t3 have found the following***:
The Nikon Z fc features a regular APS-C sized CMOS sensor, the same as that of the manufacturer's earlier Z 50 camera. It sits below the more professional targeted Z 6 and Z7 and their latest ‘mark II' iterations. Despite a plastic-y look and feel to the backplate and base plate, the camera in the main feels durably solid thanks to its magnesium alloy outer shell.
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Fast and responsive autofocus
  • Compact and lightweight
Cons
  • No built-in flash

techradar[4]

Sentiment Score 75%
Reviewers from techradar have found the following***:
The Nikon Z fc has a magnesium alloy'skeleton' which is very impressive at this price point. There's no weather-sealing, which lives up to the 'casual' name. The 20.9MP sensor has a great handle on noise, with all settings up to ISO 6400 looking clean, especially those under ISO 800.

Pros
  • Impressive image quality
  • Auto white balance (AWB)
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No weather-sealing
  • No in-camera controls

trustedreviews[5]

Sentiment Score 69%
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found the following***:
The Z fc has a 20.9MP APS-C sensor that delivers strong results in a range of lighting conditions. Despite the Z50’s age, its 209-point hybrid autofocus system is fast and accurate, with effective real-time tracking for human and animal eyes. Both cameras can shoot stills continuously at up to 11fps, which is a respectable speed for a camera in this price range. The battery is rated to provide around 300 shots on a full charge.

Pros
  • Fast and accurate autofocus
  • Excellent LCD screen
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No in-body image stabilisation
  • No headphone socket
