Product Overview

Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70 f/2.8 ASPH is a full-frame large-aperture standard zoom lens for Leica's L-mount mirrorless system. The first zoom lens to keep its f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range, the Vario-elmarit-SL 24-70 is arguably the most versatile lens for Leica SL (another candidate would be the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90 f/2.8-4).
Compared to the latest offerings from the competition, the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70 comes with a similar feature set, including 11 aperture blades and robust weather sealing.
This Leica lens' unique features include its focus mechanism and minimum focusing distance: With a linear motor, the 24-70 f/2.8 ASPH moves a single, small lens element for focusing. This affords it thunderous autofocus performance. Additionally, the lens can focus as close as 18cm at the wide end, which can prove useful for background separation in wide-angle closeup shots.

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm looks, feels, and handles just like the company's made-in-Germany SL lenses. This one is made in Japan, like the Sigma lens from which it borrows its optical formula. It's a full-frame lens, so it's a better fit for the SL2 or SL2-S, but you can pair it with the Leica CL.
Pros
  • Excellent optics
  • Dust, splash, and fluorine protection
  • Quick autofocus
Cons
  • Lacks stabilization
