Product Overview

SIGMA fp L is a high-resolution variant of the SIGMA fp introduced two years ago. By bumping up the sensor to a 61MP backside-illuminated (BSI) unit, SIGMA has made the fp L a great option for stills while keeping the compact form factor of its older sibling.
Besides the improvement in image quality, this upgrade also increases the range of crop zoom that the fp L can offer: in FHD, 5x crop zoom is possible without the need of digital enhancement. Still, users should be aware not to abuse this feature, for this essentially shrinks the effective image circle and negates the benefits of the full-frame sensor.
The fp L also supports USB-C charging as well as recording directly to external SSD via USB-C.

External Reviews

Reviewer score 71% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The Sigma fp L's 61MP chip is not a natural fit for fast video readout. Despite this the camera's specs are interesting and impressive. Internal (8-bit) Cinema DNG capture or output of 10 or 12-bit CinemaDNG to an SSD over USB.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Compact, modular design
  • Good build quality
Cons
  • Lack of dynamic range
  • Lacks dynamic range

pcmag[2]

Reviewer score 53% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sigma fp L is an extensible, full-frame camera that can be built out to meet your needs. It can take advantage of the latest autofocus lenses, but is versatile enough to take cinema and classic camera lenses with manual control. The deepest pitfall is its shutter readout speed, which limits the camera's usefulness for handheld photography.
Pros
  • Stacked sensor
  • Excellent image quality
  • Compact design
Cons
  • Shutter readout speed is slow
  • Lacks electronic flash

rtings[3]

Reviewer score 26% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The SIGMA fp L delivers good image quality out of the box. It's very portable for an interchangeable lens camera, with a compact, sturdy build. Its small size and lack of grip make it a bit uncomfortable to hold for longer periods. Its autofocus system is disappointing, and it struggles especially with tracking subjects' faces.
Pros
  • Good overall image quality
  • Decent noise handling capability
  • Weather-sealed to withstand some rain and humidity
  • Well-built and lightweight design
  • Very portable and portable for an interchangeable lens camera
Cons
  • Disappointing autofocus performance
  • No viewfinder
  • Limited frame rates for 4k
  • Lacks in-body image stabilization
