Product Overview

The 2nd-gen Mercedes G-Class (W436) is the first redesign of the flagship legendary SUV in three decades. It retains the body-on-frame chassis of the original G-Class but switches the front solid axle for independent suspensions: together with further chassis refinements, the 2nd-gen W436 G-Class offers significant improvement in ride quality.
Like the original G-Class that well-off consumers have come to like, the 2nd-gen model is still assembled in Austria by Magna Steyr. Despite the humble beginnings of the original model as a utilitarian military vehicle, the new G-Class is launched with a couple of twin-turbocharged V8 engines, while diesel models have since been made available in select markets.
In this redesign, Mercedes has significantly increased the interior space and creature comfort of the iconic SUV. Early reviews have pointed out the dramatic improvement in ride comfort as well as handling, thanks to these upgrade.
Two other aspects in which the G-Class has improved on are efficiency and technology. The new 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is part of the formula that increased the fuel efficiency, while much of the interior tech has been refreshed to fit into the new cabin.
Naturally, Mercedes has ensured that the off-road capabilities of the legendary SUV is kept intact.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The G400d is a worthy addition to the G-Class line-up. Its state-of-the-art diesel engine brings added performance and muscle to the frugal and serene properties already delivered by the G350d. This makes it a consummate on-road cruiser and just about unbeatable away from the bitumen, where its strong torque combines with its multi-faceted four-wheel drive system.

Pros
  • Powerful diesel engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • More expensive than rivals

autoexpress[2]

Sentiment Score 67%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The entry model is the G350d, which has a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine producing 282bhp. Yet many will want the AMG G63 model with its 577bhp twin-turbo V8 engine. The Bentley Bentayga is the clear rival to the G-Class because it costs around the same, offers a huge amount of luxury and prestige, and matches the Mercedes' performance figures.

Pros
  • Fantastic off-road performance
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Not very aerodynamic

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Mercedes G-Class is wonderfully unique and dripping with charm. It retains its legendary off-road capabilities, but is now far better to drive on the road. There are just two models available in the UK: the G 350 d AMG Line and Mercedes-AMG G 63. Prices start from around £94,000 for the diesel, with the G 63 weighing in at £145,000.

Pros
  • Fantastic looks
  • Gorgeous infotainment screen
Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive on the road

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
Even full-sized adults will be comfy in either row, and the rear bench can accommodate two, or even three, grown-ups thanks to thinner front seats and an impressively almost flat floor. The boot is an adequate 454 litres, pinched by the sub-woofer on the left and fuel tank on the right. Most striking of all is the E-class instrumentation that's transformed the dashboard.

Pros
  • Bigger, more agile engines
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • More expensive than the old G

cnet[5]

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G63 is not for the shy, it's loud and it sticks out like a neon tube top at a polo match. It's not going to win any handling competitions -- it's got too much body roll for that. The G-Class got a whole lot bigger for 2019, growing 4 inches in length and nearly 5 inches in width.

Pros
  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Lots of cargo space
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of MBUX infotainment tech

cnet[6]

Sentiment Score 88%
Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The G550 uses the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine you'll find under the hood of many Mercedes-AMG cars. There's a lot less play in the steering wheel and a better sense of what's happening at road level. The 2019 model can ford 27.6 inches of water and can handle a 45-degree incline.

Pros
  • Fantastic off-road capability
  • Sleek interior
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • No adaptive suspension
  • Lack of power

cnet[7]

Sentiment Score 75%
Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
Inside, the G-Class is upright and covered in the finest leather and Alcantara. The ergonomics are a little weird, because they have to conform to a very old style of SUV. Legroom is also a concern, thanks to the availability of just 38.7 inches in the front.

Cons

  • No touchscreen

cnet[8]

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class continues to be the monster off-roader that it's always been, if not moreso. There's 9.5 inches of ground clearance and between 7.3 and 8.8 inches of suspension travel. The EPA rates this thirsty boy at 13 miles per gallon city, 17 mpg highway and 14 combined.

Pros
  • Superb off-road capability
  • Sleek looks
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of infotainment tech
  • No touchscreen

cnet[9]

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The G63 gets all of the G-Class' best cabin tech, with one major caveat. There's no touchscreen, no augmented reality navigation overlays and no friendly "Hey, Mercedes" voice. The interior is just so damn nice, with optional Nappa leather surfaces and real metal accents.

Pros
  • Superb off-road performance
  • Powerful V8
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Lackluster fuel economy
  • Lack of infotainment tech

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
Whatever the G550 might lack in on-road manners it more than makes up for when the conditions are less than hospitable. Buyers seeking a large, luxurious SUV that's relatively city-friendly should look at the Porsche Cayenne. For many, this truck is as much a stylistic statement as it is an instrument of off-road mobility.

Pros
  • Superb off-road performance
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of on-road manners
  • No adaptive dampers
