Product Overview

SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary lens is a compact large-aperture standard zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras with either Sony E-mount or Leica L-mount.
Based on the optical design of the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art released in 2019, the 28-70mm F2.8 is significantly smaller and weighs just over half of its bigger brother, the dividends from the reduction of zoom range.
Besides portability, SIGMA has also endowed the new 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens with new coating and structural elements to boost its durability as well as performance in adverse lighting conditions. On the flip size, this means that the Contemporary lens is made largely of polycarbonate.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary provides the allure of a bright, fixed aperture zoom at a more affordable price and lighter weight than traditional 24-70 2.8 models. The biggest issue though is vignetting, or darkening in the corners, even with shading compensation turned on. If you’re a pixel-peeper with a high res body, it’s definitely worth shooting detailed views at f5.6 or f8 rather than wide-open.
Pros
  • Bright, sharp f2.8 wide-open
  • Good build quality
Cons
  • Vignetting and darkening at extreme corners

dpreview[2]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 turns in a decent performance when it comes to ghosting. Even when shooting into the sun, there was only a little ghosting noticeable in the far opposite corner. Sunstars are relatively pleasing, with 18 rays thanks to the nine aperture blades. We didn't see any major issues with lateral chromatic aberration for this lens.
Pros
  • Very good sharpness across the focal range
  • Very good bokeh
  • Decent autofocus
Cons
  • No full weather-sealing
  • Bulky and heavy

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is an especially appealing lens for photographers who carry a full-frame camera. It locks onto subjects as close as 7.5 inches at the wide angle and 15 inches when zoomed in. The lens pairs well with slimmer models like the Panasonic S5 and Sony a7C.
Pros
  • Good image quality at wide angle and f/2.8
  • Quick, quiet autofocus
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • Bulky and heavy
  • No fluorine coating

sonyalpha[4]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
The Sigma 28-70 F2.8 DG DN Contemporary (849 euros) is an excellent pro zoom for Sony full frame cameras. In most area it is equal to the (1200 euros) for a much more compact size and reduced price that will be ideal on a A7c. Compared to the Tamron 28-75mm F 2.8 Di III RXD and the itself, the Sigma is sharper, has better background blur, better rendering and ergonomics.
Pros
  • Very sharp, natural color rendering and soft background blur
  • Compact, light and compact
  • Good build quality
Cons
  • Smaller and lighter than the Tamron
