Product Overview

SIGMA 65mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary lens is one of four compact prime lenses designed to excel at both stills and video for the full-frame Sony E-mount and Leica L-mount systems.
Designated as the "I" series, the new series of compact lenses feature a gorgeous all-metal design that optimizes the manual focus experience in autofocus lenses. Each comes with an aluminum lens cap and petal-type lens hood.
Despite their compact sizes, these lenses are designed to minimize optical aberrations, with the only tradeoff being the moderate maximum aperture. Still, SIGMA designed these lenses to deliver sharp images wide open.
The three other lenses in this new series include the 24mm F3.5 DG DN, 35mm F2 DG DN, and 45mm F2.8 DG DN.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 71% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Sigma 65mm f2.0 DG DN achieves a convincing balance between quality, size, and price. It's very sharp at least in the APS-C image circle, shows little longitudinal color aberrations and low vignetting and distortions. The lens focuses in around 0.7 sec from infinity to 0.79m (1:10 magnification), which is OK. Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots.
Pros
  • Sharpness at f2.0
  • Large aperture ring
  • Compact size
Cons
  • Focus breathing
  • No weather sealing

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
With no other 65mm prime lens available, this lens is the smallest and lightest in its class (of one) The Sigma LH656-01 lens hood is included in the box. The lens is available in Sony E-mount, compatible with both full-frame and APS-C sensor format models.
Pros
  • Excellent build quality
  • 1/3 stop wider aperture opening
  • Good fluorine protection
Cons
  • Mild bokeh
  • Small filter threads

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 84% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary delivers outstanding quality. Autofocus is quick and quiet. There's a slight drop in clarity as you move toward the edge of the frame, but the periphery delivers excellent contrast, even when the lens is shot wide open. The lens delivers outstanding resolution, about 5,000 lines.
Pros
  • Long telephoto focal length
  • Excellent image quality
  • Wide aperture
Cons
  • No clickless operation

sonyalpha[4]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
Vignetting is moderate at F2 become very small as of F2.8 and disappear at F4 Distorsion is quite high (pincushion) The level of CA is low but you get a little bit of purple halo when facing the sun Resistance to flare is good but not excellent. Sunstars obtained at F16 are correct but not super well defined but Voigtländer is still the king for those effects.
Pros
  • Excellent sharpness (part of the top 10 sharpest lens for Sony E mount), super smooth background blur
  • Good bokeh balls, very good skin rendering and color rendition, all that at a reasonable price
  • Very good results in portraits, street photography
  • Very...
Cons
  • Clickless AF is silent, quick, and efficient in photography (a little bit less efficient in video) Performances are quite similar to the excellent (900 euros), this one is however a manual focus lens but it has some macro capabilities (
