Product Overview

Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD lens is a wide-angle zoom lens for Sony's E-mount system. With a slightly narrower focal range, this lens is exceptionally compact and lightweight for an f/2.8 wide-angle zoom.
Tamron has endowed the 28-75mm F/2.8 lens with its latest BBAR coating for improved flare-resistance. Its RXD stepping motor is specifically designed for the characteristics of a mirrorless camera. With its emphasis on image quality, this lens makes for a good option for videos and stills alike.
The Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD is a good companion to Tamron's 28-75mm F/2.8 and 70-180mm F/2.8 lenses in the mirrorless E-mount system.

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The 17-28mm f2.8 Di III is Tamron's second native lens designed specifically for Sony's full-frame mirrorless E-mount bodies. At 28mm focal length the lens focuses quickly in around 0.5 sec from infinity to 0.38m (1:10 magnification). The zoom ring turns through 65 degrees the way Sony users are used to and has a 31mm wide rubber surface with a good grip. It turns pretty stiff and can hardly be operated with one finger.
Pros
  • Sharp to very sharp
  • Compact and light
  • Very good image stabilization
Cons
  • Limited zoom range

The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens is compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras, including both full frame and APS-C sensor format models. Tamron USA provides a significant 6-year limited warranty and Tamron Europe's limited warranty is an also-long 5 years.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • No release button
  • No lens case included

Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Tamron is doing a fine job filling gaps in Sony's first-party lineup. The 17-28mm and 28-75mm are both on sale now, and form the foundation of a very solid, but budget-friendly, kit. It also has a trio of f/2.8 prime lenses, in 20, 24, and 35mm focal lengths.
Pros
  • Excellent f/2.8 aperture
  • Excellent center resolution
  • Wide angle of view
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • No fluorine front coat

phillipreeve[4]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from phillipreeve have found:
The Tamron has the benefits of being more suited to landscape astrophotography and also showing a superior flare resistance. The Sony has a more useful range and across frame sharpness might also be a bit better at the long end. Both lenses will allow you to take perfectly fine pictures. Either you want f/2.8 or you want more range and OSS.
Pros
  • Fast maximum aperture
  • Wide field of view
  • Compact dimensions
Cons
  • Flare resistance is not that great
  • No filter thread

sonyalpha[5]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
The lens is already very good at F2.8 and become excellent as of F4 up to F8. The only weaknesses are to be observed at 24 and 28mm in the corners especially wide open with less good performances. Bokeh and color rendition are very good and similar to the 16-35 GM. Vignetting is visible especially at 17mm but moderate at f2.4 CA were not detected during our tests.
Pros
  • Very good/excellent performance at 2,5 times less the price of the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8
  • Bokeh and color rendition are very good and similar to the 17-35 GM
  • Very similar sharpness at all apertures at all focal length
Cons
  • Distorsion is moderate in barrel
  • Reflective to flare when closed down to F16
