Product Overview

The Mate 40 is Huawei's latest flagship series of smartphones. Among the three models debuted at launch, the Mate 40 Pro boasts the world's first 5nm SoC, Ultra Vision Cine Camera system, and a clean and iconic design.
The Huawei 88° Horizon Display on the Mate 40 Pro creates an immersive viewing experience, while the curves on the edges make the device comfortable to hold. Underneath the gorgeous design is a chassis rated for IP68 dust and waster resistance. Within the front camera cutout in the display, Huawei now packs not only 3D Face Unlock but also Smart Gesture Control.
The Mate 40 Pro features Huawei's latest Kirin 9000 Series SoC with over 15.3 billion transistors. Its powerful CPU features a three-level power efficiency architecture with cores running at clock frequencies of up to 3.13GHz. The 24-core Mali-G78 GPU is the most powerful GPU ever found in a Huawei device, enough to power the 90Hz display with 240Hz touch sampling rate at ease.

Reviewers from nextpit have found the following***:
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro offers a very good camera package, and in my opinion, is the best on the market. I love the versatility of the camera module that is offered by the excellent telephoto lens and the very good night mode. I also love the quality of the ultra-wide-angle and I find the software processing to be subtle and natural. The smartphone has a 4,400 mAh battery with good battery life.

Cons

Reviewers from notebookcheck have found the following***:
Huawei makes the competition look pretty old with the current Kirin 9000. The 5 nm SoC is the only one of its kind that doesn't need a dedicated 5G modem. At 256 GB, the UFS 3.1 storage of the Mate 40 Pro is adequately large. Huawei succeeds in exploiting the storage's potential better, which is reflected in the high write speeds.

Pros
  • Full-fledged dual speakers
  • High-resolution display
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No aptX codec

t3[3]

Reviewer score 75%
Reviewers from t3 have found the following***:
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a smartphone packed with power, thanks to the Kirin 9000 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. 5G connectivity is supported too, as you would expect from a top-tier smartphone in 2020. The phone makes it easy to sideload apps from unofficial sources on the web, though core Google apps like Gmail still won't work. We've always found Huawei's EMUI software rather bloated and busy too, which doesn't help.

Pros
  • Top-tier hardware design
  • Excellent performance
  • Excellent camera
Cons
  • Software struggles
  • No Google Play Store

, but in general use, the phone lasted a good two days with light use. As ever, your mileage will vary depending upon how you use it, but it'll last a day, comfortably. Photos are pretty much on a par with the P40 Pro, which is to say they're some of the best available from any phone. The biggest difference is that the ultra-wide camera, with a 100-degree field of view, has a nifty ‘free-form lens'

Pros
  • Fantastic cameras
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent cameras
Cons
  • No GMS or GMS support

techradar[5]

Reviewer score 64%
Reviewers from techradar have found the following***:
The phone runs Android 10 (Google banned Huawei from using its apps and services, not Android itself) with EMUI 11 laid over the top. We're big fans of EMUI - it has loads of options to change the way the phone works. It brings quite a big visual overhaul from stock Android, with vibrant backgrounds and app icons. As with most Huawei phones, EMUI has a built-in step counter, potentially making your fitness tracker redundant.

Pros
  • Fantastic battery life
  • Great display
Cons
  • No Google apps
  • No wireless charging
  • No Google Drive

tomsguide[6]

Reviewers from tomsguide have found the following***:
Huawei has continued its air gestures system, which debuted on the Mate 30. This time around, there are more gestures you can use, allowing you to wake the phone up; swipe screens up, down, left or right; and use a pressing gesture to answer phonecalls or play/pause media. All this is powered by the same sensor that also enables Face Recognition.

Pros
  • Excellent cameras
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent performance
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • No 5G

trustedreviews[7]

Reviewers from trustedreviews have found the following***:
Huawei’s phones have been among the best camera phones around for a few years. At the helm is a 50-megapixel f/1.9 camera; identical to the one included with the excellent Huawei P40 Pro Plus. On the plus, the ultra-wide camera lens comes with manual focus and can grab macro photos, which is a boon. The camera also grabs decent background blur when shooting close-up objects, something few smartphones can achieve in video.

Pros
  • Fantastic performance
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent cameras
Cons
  • No Google Assistant support
