Product Overview

Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 is an entry-level hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera. With a dual-gain sensor that has base ISOs at 100 and 640, the Lumix S5 is an excellent budget choice to enter full-frame stills and videos shooting.
The Lumix S5 offers 14+ stops of dynamic range as well as V-Log / V-Gamut compatibility. Like other Panasonic mirrorless cameras, the S5 is optimized for video work, supporting 4:3 Anamorphic mode, 4K 60p interval shooting, and 4K HDR.
It also offers lots of flexibility in usage, with two SD card slots (including one UHS-II) as well as WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. The flip-out display makes it easy for content creators in vlog applications and for consumers with selfie works or group photos.

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
’re shooting 10 bit 4k internal, clips are limited to half an hour each, but I managed four consecutive ones on a single charge without overheating. The S5 also becomes the first full-framer at its price point to offer 4k at 50 or 60p, albeit with an APSC crop. There’s also support for anamorphic modes which use special lenses to squeeze a wide aspect ratio into a 4:3 shape for recording.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Excellent autofocus
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • No RAW video
  • No built-in zoom

digitaltrends[2]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
The Panasonic Lumix S5 is shaping up to be a very impressive, high-end video camera. It's a miniature workhorse that can keep rank with its larger, more expensive siblings. You can get S1H quality from a camera that's half the price. The camera has grown on me a little more every day that I've had it.
Pros
  • S1H video quality
  • 5.9K RAW video
  • Firmware update is coming soon
Cons
  • No continuous autofocus or 6K internal recording
  • No video assist tools

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Panasonic is sticking with its contrast-detection autofocus system with the S5. Subject tracking is effective, but is limited to working at 6fps. The S5 is the best full-frame camera for the money for videographers. It records internally at 10-bit quality, and can push 60fps at 4K.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • 10-bit video recording
  • In-body stabilization
  • 5-axis stabilizer
Cons
  • No manual focus

rtings[4]

Reviewer score 68% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Panasonic S5 is great for travel photography. Images are low in noise and graininess, even at high ISO levels. It also features a wide shutter speed range, allowing for intricate long-exposure photography. Its autofocus system is also quick and reliable, and the camera's body feels exceptionally well-built.
Pros
  • Excellent overall video quality
  • Excellent autofocus system
  • Superb battery life
  • Incredibly well-built and comfortable to hold
  • Great overall video performance
  • Impressive autofocusing system.
  • Incredible battery l
Cons
  • Bulky and bulky for a mirrorless camera
  • High maximum shooting speed isn't particularly high

t3[5]

Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
Panasonic S5 is a good little hybrid camera available at an affordable price. Image and video quality is very good - which is arguably the most important thing. The body of the camera is also well-designed, with an ergonomic and sensible layout. There are still some problems with Panasonic S5 that could put you off, largely due to the type of photographer you are.
Pros
  • Very good image and video quality
  • Fully articulating screen
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No full-frame mirrorless
  • Micro HDMI port

techradar[6]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
Panasonic Lumix S5 is a full-frame Micro Four Thirds camera with a 20-60mm kit lens. It offers V-Log recording with 14 stops of dynamic range, time-lapse recording, dual native ISO and anamorphic 4K. Micro HDMI cables tend to be more prone to breaking than their full-size equivalents, but it's not a deal-breaker.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Excellent autofocus
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • No Micro HDMI port
  • Can struggle with high-contrast situations
