Product Overview

Volkswagen Arteon (Type 3H7) facelift is a large sedan in production from 2020. It is available with a range of inline-4 engines that displaced 1.4 to 2.0 liters.
Sharing its chassis with the B8 Passat, the Arteon is slotted to be between the Passat and the Audi A6. Unfortunately, it is limited to 4 cylinders.
Volkswagen has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.26 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.
Drivers who appreciate handling should keep in mind that the Volkswagen Arteon uses MacPherson front suspension, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.

The Arteon R gets a few highlights to suggest that it’s sporty, such as mock carbon inserts, blue stitching, grippy seat trim and, on the overburdened infotainment, if you personalise your own drive mode you can pick from 15 different states for your dampers. The driving position is brilliantly true and widely adjustable, and the ergonomics while good, not as bad as a Golf 8, are not quite as brill as a VW should be.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Good infotainment
Cons
  • Not quite as fast as a Golf 8
  • Not as practical as a Passat

, the fastback being 1428mm tall and the estate 1447mm. Both Arteon variants are offered here with four revised turbocharged four-cylinder engines. All get front-wheel drive and, in most cases, the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Also coming, although not until next spring, are the new Arteons R and Shooting Brake R.

Pros

Cons

  • No automatic gearbox

Volkswagen's Arteon Fastback is a more emotional alternative to the practical Passat saloon. The plug-in model offers strong efficiency (with the battery charged), plenty of kit and the car is a bit more stylish than some VWs. It's not that sporty, but majors on refinement and a ride that on the whole is comfortable.

Pros

The Arteon R Shooting Brake is a practical, potent and pragmatic alternative to Volkswagen's Tiguan R SUV. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive. The 0-62mph sprint only takes 4.9 seconds, while there are 590 litres of boot space on offer.

Pros
  • Svelte styling
  • Powerful four-cylinder engine

Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive

A 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 is the only engine available, with 268 horsepower. The Arteon isn't necessarily quick, but the turbo punch is enough to get this four-door up and out of its own way. Volkswagen says it targets the Acura TLX and Nissan Maxima as competitors.

Pros
  • Sleek, refined interior
  • Comfortable ride
  • Decent infotainment tech
Cons
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive
  • Lack of standard four-wheel drive

The Arteon would make a great long-distance cruiser or commuter car, but it also has the makings of a good driver's car. The standard adaptive suspension did a great job of balancing handling and comfort. To get maximum tech, you need to go with the range-topping SEL Premium R-Line model.

Pros
  • Powerful V6 engine
  • Excellent ride quality
  • Comfortable to drive
