Volkswagen Arteon & Arteon R Fastback Sedan & Arteon Shooting Brake Wagon (2021 MY facelift)

NEX score 68%

Product Overview

The Volkswagon Arteon facelift expands the lineup to include not only a fastback sedan but also a shooting brake wagon. The flagship model of VW, the new Arteon sports a redesigned front fascia and upgraded powertrain, too.
The Arteon and the Arteon Shooting Brake are both characterized by athletic lines but differ significantly between themselves from the B-pillars rearwards.
For the first time, a plug-in hybrid model, the Arteon eHybrid, is available for both the sedan and the wagon. Also the first for Arteon is the Arteon R powered by a high-performance 2.0L petrol engine that produces 316 bhp; R-Performance Torque Vectoring that distributes torque dynamically between the axles and between the rear wheels can be found, too.

autocar[1]

Sentiment Score 73%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Arteon R gets a few highlights to suggest that it’s sporty, such as mock carbon inserts, blue stitching, grippy seat trim and, on the overburdened infotainment, if you personalise your own drive mode you can pick from 15 different states for your dampers. The driving position is brilliantly true and widely adjustable, and the ergonomics while good, not as bad as a Golf 8, are not quite as brill as a VW should be.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Good infotainment
Cons
  • Not quite as fast as a Golf 8
  • Not as practical as a Passat

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
, the fastback being 1428mm tall and the estate 1447mm. Both Arteon variants are offered here with four revised turbocharged four-cylinder engines. All get front-wheel drive and, in most cases, the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Also coming, although not until next spring, are the new Arteons R and Shooting Brake R.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment
Cons
  • Fiddly to use
  • No automatic gearbox

autoexpress[3]

Sentiment Score 51%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Volkswagen's Arteon Fastback is a more emotional alternative to the practical Passat saloon. The plug-in model offers strong efficiency (with the battery charged), plenty of kit and the car is a bit more stylish than some VWs. It's not that sporty, but majors on refinement and a ride that on the whole is comfortable.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of agility

autoexpress[4]

Sentiment Score 74%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Arteon R Shooting Brake is a practical, potent and pragmatic alternative to Volkswagen's Tiguan R SUV. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive. The 0-62mph sprint only takes 4.9 seconds, while there are 590 litres of boot space on offer.

Pros
  • Svelte styling
  • Powerful four-cylinder engine
  • Lots of standard kit
Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive

cnet[5]

Sentiment Score 78%
Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
A 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 is the only engine available, with 268 horsepower. The Arteon isn't necessarily quick, but the turbo punch is enough to get this four-door up and out of its own way. Volkswagen says it targets the Acura TLX and Nissan Maxima as competitors.
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Sleek, refined interior
  • Comfortable ride
  • Decent infotainment tech
Cons
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive
  • Lack of standard four-wheel drive

digitaltrends[6]

Sentiment Score 61%
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The Arteon would make a great long-distance cruiser or commuter car, but it also has the makings of a good driver's car. The standard adaptive suspension did a great job of balancing handling and comfort. To get maximum tech, you need to go with the range-topping SEL Premium R-Line model.

Pros
  • Powerful V6 engine
  • Excellent ride quality
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of tech
  • Lacks refinement
