Product Overview
The Samsung 870 QVO SATA SSD is the company's 2nd-generation quad-level cell (QLC) flash drive with industry-leading capacity of up to 8TB (eight terabytes). The 870 QVO combines speed, capacity, and reliability for the consumer storage market.
The 870 QVO offers best-in-class sequential read and write speeds, thanks to the drive's Intelligent TurboWrite technology with a large variable SLC buffer (up to 42GB for 1TB model, and up to 72GB for higher capacity models). It is also significantly faster than its predecessor, the 860 QVO, in random reads and writes.
In early 2021, Samsung released the 870 EVO that offers the same speed while trading some capacity for higher durability.

Reviewer score 83%The Samsung SSD 870 QVO is a strong storage option for anyone still married to SATA connectors. It manages to make the most of a bus that hit a point of relative stagnation years ago. By carefully optimizing the drive to respond more favorably to 4K random reads, Samsung has created a drive that in some situations keeps pace with higher-end offerings.

Pros
- Fast 4K random reads
- Solid performance across file and folder types
- Competitive price per gigabyte
Cons
- 2.5-inch bays are a bit heavy for a SATA drive
pcworld[2]
Reviewer score 81%Samsung's 870 QVO is a standard 2.5-inch SATA 6Gbps SSD. It's a great everyday performer; however, when you run out of cache (which shouldn't be often) write pace falls off drastically. Samsung uses its own MKX controller, and there's 1GB of DRAM cache for each 1TB of 96-layer NAND.

Pros
- Sleek, lightweight design
- Excellent write performance
- Good value for money
Cons
- Slow write speed
- No Thunderbolt 3
techradar[3]
Reviewer score 70%Samsung's 870 QVO is a high-capacity version of its 860 QVO SSD. The drive is rated at 11K IOPS in random reads and 30,296 IOPS for random writes. These are impressive speeds for a SATA SSD, but they're nearly at the limit of what's possible on now-dated connector.

Pros
- Excellent read and write performance
- Competitive price per gigabyte
Cons
- No SATA III support
tomshardware[4]
Reviewer score 70%Samsung's 870 QVO comes with a new SATA 6Gbps controller, but the company is tight-lipped about the details of the hardware. The company says it improved random performance by 13% at a queue depth (QD) of 1 thanks to the new controller and flash. The QVO's endurance is significantly higher than many of its QLC competitors, like Sabrent's Rocket Q and Intel's SSD 665p.

Pros
- Up to 8TB of storage
- Excellent performance
- Three-year warranty
Cons
- Lacks AES 256-bit hardware encryption
- Short warranty
