Product Overview

The 2020 Hilux facelift combines design updates with the addition of a powerful 2.8-litre diesel powertrain as well as improvements to on- and off-road performance with greater comfort.
Hilux's 1 tonne payload and 3.5 tonne towing capability are now expanded to all 4-wheel drive body types (Single, Extra, and Double Cabs). To improve Hilux's already industry-leading off-road capabilities, the new Hilux incorporates a new electronic function replicating the effects of a mechanical LSD found on 2WD models, lowers engine idle speed from 850 to 680 rpm, an updated VSC system, and a new tire angle monitor.
On the outside, the new exterior is bolder, including newly-designed front and rear LED light clusters. Inside, the new 8-inch infotainment screen adopts mechanical buttons and dials for enhanced operability under all driving conditions. Moreover smart entry and push-button start, satellite navigation, automatic A/C, front and rear parking sensors, and a 9-speaker JBL Premium Sound System with an 800W 8-channel amplifier are all available.
A new, top-of-the-line "Invinciable" trim offers bespoke styling and premium equipment without compromise to the capabilities and legendary quality, durability, and reliability that have made Hilux an icon from urban to the harshest environments.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
A new 201bhp 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine is now being offered. Chunky-looking exterior styling revisions have been made to top-of-the-line Invincible X double-cab Hiluxes. New variable-assistance hydraulic power steering set-up intended to make handling more precise at speed.

Pros
  • Lots of fun to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
  • Good-sized back seats
Cons
  • Tough to drive

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel is gutsy enough in isolation, but the 2.8- litre diesel is the one to go for if you're used to punchy power delivery. All models receive Aux in and USB ports, along with Bluetooth connectivity. Icon and Invincible versions include a DAB radio, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also now available. There’s better storage in the Hilux than in some rival pick-ups.

Pros
  • Comfortable to sit in
  • Good standard equipment
  • Decent handling
Cons
  • Fidgety suspension
  • No automatic gearbox

autoexpress[3]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Hilux is now second only to the Ford Ranger in the four-cylinder pick-up pack for power. It's available with six-speed manual or auto gearboxes, while selectable four-wheel drive and low-range gears make the most of that power. An automatic limited-slip diff in 2WD mode also helps with traction when running in the Hilux's most efficient setting. Other revisions under the skin include suspension that has been tuned to deliver a smoother ride when unladen.

Pros
  • Excellent off-road capability
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of power

carmagazine[4]

Reviewer score 72%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The new 2.8-litre Bi-Turbo engine runs it very close to the new Ford Ranger. Off-road, within its apparently high limits, the Hilux is basically unflappable. The design is more modern life than working life, yet retains substantive ease of use – with chunky controls and a good balance between physical buttons and touchscreen activity. It's a very convincing, very convincing package.

Pros
  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Lots of standard equipment
  • Excellent rear-axle articulation
Cons
  • Nothing in particular
